    As an Intern

    Intern (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsGreat internship program, was able to work on a variety of projects and thus learn about the scientific aspects of the field as well as the regulatory and operational aspects. Generous benefits even for inters including enrichment opportunities, and free T passes

ConsDifficult to translate internship into full-time job. Internships typically done while in school, but employment in fields in which the internships are offered require 3-5 years of experience for the entry level positions.

Fantastic first job which grew stale due to to their direction of research

Research Scientist I (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsBack in 2006 when I first joined the site in San Diego, Vertex was a special place. Scientists were excited about their work and one could sense the enthusiasm at project team meetings. Personally, I had a great experience my first 6 years there. The work-life balance is great, but it does depend on your group dynamics. And from what I've observed, the benefits are right up there at par with the best companies.

ConsVertex has experienced an immense growth phase due to the success of 2 marketed drugs. As a result, the bureaucracy has increased to a ridiculous amount. The values of the company have had to shift due to being a publicly traded company. There is nothing really exciting behind the CF drugs, so if they don't continue to work in the clinic, I smell trouble for the company.

    Great science, great company.

Finance Manager (Current Employee) Boston, MA

ProsGreat employee benefits and an infectious work atmosphere to foster innovative research culture. A strong-willed leadership team drives this company forward.

ConsThe company is currently in a state of flux due to pending study results. While this creates a level of uncertainty, the company vision is becoming clearer due to strong leadership at the CEO position.

    Great science & Great people.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery unique organization with great people and a lot of opportunity for growth (with or without PhD). There is a commitment and passion for science. It's also a very challenging, dynamic, and exciting collaborative environment. Management is open and attentive. Great benefits for full time employees.

ConsDepending on the project, weekends, long hours, and holidays may be expected on a regular basis. Sometimes because it's a smaller company, personnel resourcing may be an issue.

Unstable, rocky executive team, but great benefits

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAmazing benefits- pay next to nothing for health insurance and you get great coverage, great stock plan, good 401k matching, 6 weeks of PTO. Great people in research, beautiful location.

ConsUnstable company, layoffs are happening left and right. Promotions and recognition awards are based on favoritism, stress level is very high, people do not feel there is any job stability there, they began outsourcing a lot of administrative programs last year and those have taken a nose dive in reliability and thoroughness (relocation, benefits, etc). I think the CEO is shaping the company for sale so no one should feel stable there for the next few years.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote from within. Amazing you had to "slash headcount" and cut 400-plus employees last year, yet you just keep hiring! Stop burning out perfectly good researchers and realize you need a more competitive edge. You aren't going to keep up with mid-big pharma at this rate. Those researchers are why your pockets are full of money.

    Great place to work

Associate Director (Current Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsThe company is innovative and working in an exciting and rewarding area, cystic fibrosis.

ConsLoss of revenues in the past year has made it more challenging.
