I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazing benefits, vacation time and one off perks! Great coworkers and an opportunity to have an impact on life threatening diseases. Lots of learning and resume building opportunity that you don't necessarily get at other companies (how many other companies in the area have successfully brought drugs to the market in the past 5 years, let alone multiple drugs?).

    Cons

Current culture is very different even from a few years ago. Middle managers (department heads especially) have adopted a "do as I say, not as I do" attitude. Bad behavior is rampant in many forms - screaming and yelling at meetings, temper tantrums in the office and gossiping with direct reports. There also seems to be a lack of opportunity for promotion for those in the lower / entry level positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what your managers are doing and follow up. Don't just assume things are running along smoothly. Its those departments that have a lack of oversight that are running wild and ruining the culture and individual department morale.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

    Flexible work schedule
    Compensation
    Good Swag
    Fun, helpful colleagues

    Cons

Processes can be a bit confusing at times
Working with TPOs a bit challenging since they were not always trusted to do the work. This resulted in the full time employees doing quite a bit of double work.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Vertex @ SD served free breakfast and held community gatherings. Held numerous promotions for CF in the surrounding community.

    Cons

A great degree of bureaucracy. People mind their own business and the scientists appeared more pessimistic than usual.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow students to diversify their exposure to big Pharma, even if they are interning inside a particular cell culture lab in the electrophysiology department (i.e. Expose them to process and development, HTS, etc.) Diversification is important for students (especially the interns!).

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great internship program, was able to work on a variety of projects and thus learn about the scientific aspects of the field as well as the regulatory and operational aspects. Generous benefits even for inters including enrichment opportunities, and free T passes

    Cons

Difficult to translate internship into full-time job. Internships typically done while in school, but employment in fields in which the internships are offered require 3-5 years of experience for the entry level positions.

I worked at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Back in 2006 when I first joined the site in San Diego, Vertex was a special place. Scientists were excited about their work and one could sense the enthusiasm at project team meetings. Personally, I had a great experience my first 6 years there. The work-life balance is great, but it does depend on your group dynamics. And from what I've observed, the benefits are right up there at par with the best companies.

    Cons

Vertex has experienced an immense growth phase due to the success of 2 marketed drugs. As a result, the bureaucracy has increased to a ridiculous amount. The values of the company have had to shift due to being a publicly traded company. There is nothing really exciting behind the CF drugs, so if they don't continue to work in the clinic, I smell trouble for the company.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great employee benefits and an infectious work atmosphere to foster innovative research culture. A strong-willed leadership team drives this company forward.

    Cons

The company is currently in a state of flux due to pending study results. While this creates a level of uncertainty, the company vision is becoming clearer due to strong leadership at the CEO position.

I have been working at Vertex Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Very unique organization with great people and a lot of opportunity for growth (with or without PhD). There is a commitment and passion for science. It's also a very challenging, dynamic, and exciting collaborative environment. Management is open and attentive. Great benefits for full time employees.

    Cons

Depending on the project, weekends, long hours, and holidays may be expected on a regular basis. Sometimes because it's a smaller company, personnel resourcing may be an issue.
