Employees are only a number and have no job security

I worked at Virginia Transformer Corp.

    Pros

The employees are great to work with, however; turnover is so high that it's unlikely that you'll work with the same people for very long. People are literally fired on a daily basis for no reason other than the fact that they can import Indian workers from their other location and pay them pennies on the dollar to work 14 hours days.

    Cons

There is no work-life balance, no job security, benefits are lacking, and employee morale is non-existent. The good reviews that you see online are posted by the HR Manager so don't be fooled. This place has a terrible reputation and is considered one of the worst employers in the Roanoke Valley.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect and value the significant contributions that they make each day.

It is hard to believe this company still has customers.

I have been working at Virginia Transformer Corp. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

As with every place of employment, you can find pockets of good people with good intentions and decent skills. Be sure to be a self-starter and don't expect much training.

    Cons

CULTURE SHOCK. Be a man or you won't get paid your worth. Management style is very cut-throat. If you want to stay employed, do not have an opinion that differs from the boss.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a look in the mirror. Do you like what you see? Can you even sleep at night knowing what you know?

A company that competes by a psuedo-prison philosophy.

I have been working at Virginia Transformer Corp. full-time

    Pros

I love the work itself, and I get along great with my coworkers.

    Cons

Most salaried employees make 15-30% less than their market value dictates. VTC manages to retain good employees by using dirty tricks in US immigration law by getting highly skilled employees under the L1 visa. Under this particular visa, VTC will sponsor immigrants to come to the US to work here. However, if that employee wants to quit, he loses his sponsorship and is deported - hence employees quit very rarely, even if they hate the company they work for. Because the employees have no cards to bargain with (they certainly can't just find work at a better company) VTC doesn't have to pay competitive wages to keep good employees around. It is interesting that a good immigration reform policy by the government could literally devastate this company.

For myself, I make $12,000 less than an entry level professional would in the same industry (and I'm NOT entry level). I plan to make every effort to remove myself from the company when I am capable of doing so.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a big disconnect between the top of the company and the people who make things happen everyday. This is in part because the company is essentially a sole proprietorship, with one man on top who quite often makes bad decisions.

I have been working at Virginia Transformer Corp. full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Small company, hence many different opportunities and projects to work
Company does grow no matter whats the economy.

    Cons

    A Lot!
Micromanagement, lack of trust, cheap culture within organization, no flexible time for work (Salaried person), vacation time used for shutdown,
importance is given for amount of hours you work not for the quality of work, such a dumb and cheap way to assess one's performance, literally you will be praised more you stay after 5 pm.
Employees are taken for granted, no respect for their personal life.
fire randomly, yes I mentioned job security in Pros, but it depends case by case
    Too much work per person,
    No parking spaces, seriously

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to respect employees and their valuable quality of work, not who works longer or stays longer. Employees do have personal life, respect that. There are smart people working, pay them good and trust them, really TRUST.

I have been working at Virginia Transformer Corp.

    Pros

Great place to kick off a career. Lots to learn and great training program. Very effective. Managers are highly qualified and great to work with.

    Cons

nothing much really. Enjoyed my work here. Roanoke can get cold as it is n the mountains. Summer is beautiful though. Not for those who are from warm climates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going. Great track you guys are on and will defintiely advance leaps and bounds
