Bad working environment if you don't "luck out" with a good store

I worked at Visionworks full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I learned a lot of useful skills at Visionworks...how to pretest people coming in for eye exams, verify insurances, teach people how to put in and remove their new contact lenses, etc. The "OD Coordinator" position is basically being an assistant to the Optometrist. It's also a position you can feel good about.

    Cons

The overall environment varies from store to store. The store that I trained at was really nice where everyone was respectful of one another and acted cohesively to make the store and the workday more pleasant. Stores like that seem to be dying out. After my training I worked at three other locations that were all NEW stores and they were all horrible. Disrespect, discrimination, jealousy, playing favorites, undermining good employees, while the bad ones seem to have management wrapped around their finger, even driving a hostile environment by reminding us all on an almost daily basis that "you don't need to be friends (with your coworkers)"...the list goes on...the job itself is good, but management can really make or break the experience.

    Pros

Good pay and vacation. We're part of the few union stores, so they do help to protect us from corporate bs

    Cons

Sell sell sell crap to everyone, even if they don't need it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If we in the stors did our jobs half as crappy as the Texas employees did, we'd all have been fired. No accountability , no phone calls returned

    Pros

Fast action, always pushing for the sale makes the day go quick!!

    Cons

The product is cheap and do not hold up for very long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to swindle people. Just give them there Rx if they want to go somewhere else.

    Pros

It was alright money for being in college. I learned a lot about business.

    Cons

Hard to move up. Most managers are hired in with no experience for some reason and are usually less qualified than you and do a horrible job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go to college, read a book, and don't be-little your employees.

I worked at Visionworks part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Manager was flexible with hours and time off. Laid-back atmosphere for the most part (Could vary depending on General Manager). Good start to optical sales to learn the basics and gain experience.

    Cons

Company only cares about sales stats. You could meet your daily/ weekly goal, but if you did not sell enough anti-glare or high index lenses, then your performance was frowned upon. Also, the store promotions are stupid. There are way too many promotions being offered at once, which only confuses the customers and makes it more difficult to meet sales goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Limit the number of promotions offered at a time. Depending on the sale, the ending balance could be $100 cheaper if it is calculated under one promotion vs. the other. This only confuses customers and employees. Applaud the sales numbers, not fine details of what is being sold. Not every customer needs a designer frame holding transition digital lenses and a "free" pair of sunglasses under the BOGO sale.

I have been working at Visionworks full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun coworkers, semi flexible hours, paid holidays, sundays off

    Cons

Incompetent managers, restrictive dress code (red, black, or white and solid colors only). Pay increases are minute and performance increases are nearly impossible to get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your hourly, union workers more than you do. Acknowledge our issues, even if they seem petty to you. Screen your lower management more thoroughly. Don't leave policies open to such wide interpretation. Allow us to use all the colors to dress. Our morale has suffered greatly since this merger.

I have been working at Visionworks part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Get free glasses each year.

    Cons

Upper Management are like vultures over you about sales and are never happy with the sales that an employee makes especially if you only sale one pair. The company does not care about its customers nor employees because their too busy trying to find ways to not give any raises and raise prices to make profit. But I guess that's most companies. Were not only sales people but were also telemarketers. This company would be great if it weren't all about sales sales sales! Our commission goes up in levels. However, it doesn't matter if your at the top level because at the start of each year everybody starts from the bottom, so its like if they were taking away a part of your paycheck. These are only half my complaints about this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe that the upper management is putting on so much pressure that employees are losing motivation to sale and the company has also lost its vision to help its customers.
