I worked at Visionworks part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Manager was flexible with hours and time off. Laid-back atmosphere for the most part (Could vary depending on General Manager). Good start to optical sales to learn the basics and gain experience.

    Cons

Company only cares about sales stats. You could meet your daily/ weekly goal, but if you did not sell enough anti-glare or high index lenses, then your performance was frowned upon. Also, the store promotions are stupid. There are way too many promotions being offered at once, which only confuses the customers and makes it more difficult to meet sales goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Limit the number of promotions offered at a time. Depending on the sale, the ending balance could be $100 cheaper if it is calculated under one promotion vs. the other. This only confuses customers and employees. Applaud the sales numbers, not fine details of what is being sold. Not every customer needs a designer frame holding transition digital lenses and a "free" pair of sunglasses under the BOGO sale.

    Pros

Fun coworkers, semi flexible hours, paid holidays, sundays off

    Cons

Incompetent managers, restrictive dress code (red, black, or white and solid colors only). Pay increases are minute and performance increases are nearly impossible to get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your hourly, union workers more than you do. Acknowledge our issues, even if they seem petty to you. Screen your lower management more thoroughly. Don't leave policies open to such wide interpretation. Allow us to use all the colors to dress. Our morale has suffered greatly since this merger.

    Pros

    Get free glasses each year.

    Cons

Upper Management are like vultures over you about sales and are never happy with the sales that an employee makes especially if you only sale one pair. The company does not care about its customers nor employees because their too busy trying to find ways to not give any raises and raise prices to make profit. But I guess that's most companies. Were not only sales people but were also telemarketers. This company would be great if it weren't all about sales sales sales! Our commission goes up in levels. However, it doesn't matter if your at the top level because at the start of each year everybody starts from the bottom, so its like if they were taking away a part of your paycheck. These are only half my complaints about this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe that the upper management is putting on so much pressure that employees are losing motivation to sale and the company has also lost its vision to help its customers.

    Pros

Great co-workers, great pay, great bonus

    Cons

Managers stand in the front of the store and do nothing while their employees run around trying to do everything. Customers get mad and the managers can't do anything about it.

    Pros

Entry level job for a good long term career. Works around school schedule. Decent pay and good discount if you need glasses.

    Cons

Poor working conditions, management only cares about numbers and not people not customers. Not much upward mobility. Would rather hire new than promote.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realistic reward program needed. No recognition for exceeding goals, only how you can do "better".

I have been working at Visionworks part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Entry level friendly, free glasses and contacts annually. There is a great chance to help clients and grow a loyal customer base.

    Cons

I've been working for the company for over 5 years, and in that time I have had 6 GMs. I should have known they were bad news when open enrollment came around and my GM signed my paperwork for me! I called HR because I was fairly new to the company and the only thing they did about it was to tell the GM exactly what I called them about. Several stores have lost their entire staff and had to start from scratch, the turnover rate is obscene, but that's how they get away with paying employees such unlivable wages. GMs rarely are given time to live outside employment, no vacations, no family time, working for peanuts over 60 hours a week until they can be replaced. My KPI's have always been well above company standards, but this year when our reviews came up I was denied a raise. Those who rarely show up for their shifts, or when they do come could care less about actually working, were given enormous raises. Now to top it off, our RS leaves in the middle of her shift leaving two EWS to run the store. This company seems to reward those who don't deserve it and punish those who want to work for them. Their tracking systems of sales is quirky and there are always discrepancies, upper management placates complaints, the stores are always understaffed and hours are continually cut, and the computer system is outdated to say the least, all of this destroys good customer service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop cutting corners, staff your stores like you do in the training videos, reward those who deserve it, get rid of unqualified and undeserving staff, update the computers, and for the love of everything, stop generating so much waste!

    Pros

good pay, good benefits, great doctors and good coworkers for the most part

    Cons

where to start.. the company seems to only care about money and numbers they care nothing about there employees and even less about customers. they say they have an open door but when you take anything to them it gets you in trouble for trying to start trouble or rocking the boat, managers are held responsible for everyone in the store but yet the TD wont let you do anything to an employee that isnt doing there job and if you call HR they tell you to call your TD and then they call and tell them what you said. the expectations are crazy, they write you up if you cant up-sale customers, because its not what is best for the customer its how much money you can get from them. the training is crazy its watch a bunch of videos and read a couple of books then sink or swim. you can get in trouble for the way you "coach" employees but the TD can talk down to you and yell at you and make you feel like crap and you cant do anything about it cause if you call HR then you get in trouble. turn over is outrages in the over 7 yrs i have been there i have seen 2TDs 7 GMs and 8 retail supervisors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

there is no balance between work and home life with the crazy hours, you need to really think about what is going on in your stores with the turn over rates, the expectations are outrages you cant expect so much out of your employees when it comes to sales and still take state aids that dont let you upgrade. you need to put more training into your employees.
