    I worked at Volcano Corporation

    Pros

Proud to be a part of life changing technology that helps people in life threatening illnesses.

    Cons

As the company expands globally, they continues to thrive with their personnel talent and versatility but unfortunately expansions sometimes affects other people's livelyhood.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"I've only work here as contract worker for almost 2yrs. but I love the people I work with and a great place to work for 'coz you yourself represent the image and quality of your product. I'm proud to be part of this company even only for a short period of time."

I have been working at Volcano Corporation full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Volcano is about to be acquired by one of the leading companies in the medical device field. This should speed up many of the improvements Volcano management was already in the process of making with respect to business processes, systems, collaboration, and infrastructure.

    Cons

The company has been struggling to transition out of a rapid start-up and entrepreneurial mind-set. Many of the processes, applications, etc. were more appropriate for a much smaller medical device company, not one like Volcano with over 2000 employees located across the globe. Management chronically underinvested in systems, tools and infrastructure which would allow them to take the company to the next level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The agreement to be acquired by a large medical device company with a great reputation was the smart move. Ultimately this should result in increased market penetration for Volcano's excellent cardiology and peripheral product portfolio into more hospital sites world-wide, and improve the working conditions of the employees who survive the shakeout following the acquisition.

    Pros

Great products, reasonable salary, and great teammates!

    Cons

Not enough room for professional growth and salary comparable to the market.

Continue to take care of the reps out in the field with established relationships.

I have been working at Volcano Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart, high-integrity people. A lot of honesty and cooperation. Few if any jerks. Lots of interesting challenges in a dynamic industry with the potential to save or improve thousands of lives.

    Cons

Small/mid-sized company competing with giants. Strategic mistakes/misdirection and false starts that are a natural part of the growing pains for a $300-400M company but that put in doubt whether all the effort and hard work will ultimately pay off. People go all-out but stock is trading at 1/3 what it was a couple years ago. Hard sometimes to keep the faith.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue and expand on your efforts at robust communications with employees. You've got a loyal base despite the current strong headwinds. They're invested, but want to better understand the thinking behind strategic decisions - and to know that those decisions were careful and deliberate.

I worked at Volcano Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Loved working for Vickie Wilson, she is extremely intelligent, patient, kind, understanding and yet has is able to take a strong stand when needed. They build medical products that save lives everyday and it is wonderful to be a part of those events. Many other employees and managers will be missed, with a very good group to work with.

    Cons

The company is moving its manufacturing to Costa Rica, therefore eliminating my position. Promotions were very slow in coming, but it was a small company as far as the manufacturing portion of it goes. They are going in Costa Rica with lots of opportunity for the Costa Ricans but not here.

I have been working at Volcano Corporation full-time

    Pros

People are fun and enjoyable to work with. Time off is comparable with most other companies. Fun events outside of work.

    Cons

Good changes happen slowly, and bad changes happen quickly. There really is no employee incentive program. Awards typically go to groups of people who are just doing their jobs, not going above and beyond.

I worked at Volcano Corporation full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Volcano covers many aspects of their products: design, manufacturing, sales, etc. so any talented professional will have a role to play. Technology is amazing, sophisticated, and is key to saving lives.

    Cons

Engineering is an eight-hour drive north of the HQ. Another design team is out east. Software team seemed too eager to apply all the big-time methodologies and best practices, to the point of decreasing their productivity. (But this is not my area of professional expertise, and things may have changed.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, the company was a very nice place to work. Good support from colleagues.

    Pros

The team at Volcano is the most highly educated and intelligent I have ever worked with. The company culture is dynamic, and fast paced. But, there is also a family atmosphere. Teamwork at Volcano is key to success.

    Cons

Sometimes it's really too busy :)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
