I have been working at Volvo

    Pros

Big global corporation, brand name, relavtively stable job

    Cons

Cube farm culture, Middle level mangers are directionless, Most of the challenging engineering work is handled in Sweden

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Introduce open office culture and more flexible timings/vacation schedule for work/life balance. Enhance engineering capability in North America to serve the local market better

I have been working at Volvo

    Pros

no pressure at work and decent amount of allowed time off.
you can keep your job without doing much work.

    Cons

No room to advance and grow and strict one-way communication from the management.
'Global' way is Swedish way and no real clear goal or vision other than big talks from the management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

please value regional (non-EU) employees, and senior regional management should focus more on regional growth and should listen to the voices from regional folks.

I have been working at Volvo

    Pros

    Global, profitable and environment concious
A good reputation as a responsible company

    Cons

    Everything is controlled by processes
The individuals hide or are hidden behind those processes.
HR are centralized and live a life of their own without proper feedback from the contributing parts of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decentralize HR and put the working parts of the organisation in charge of HR issues.
Dont hide the indviduals behind processes.
Make sure to get the right information, not just the middle management version.

I have been working at Volvo

    Pros

Company has very strong growth. Has a global presence. Strong engineering capability. A strong vision of where the company's wanted position is in the future. Strong opportunities for growth if you are Swedish or French. Opportunities to work in a multi-cultural environment.

    Cons

For North Americans there is a significant glass ceiling; although, making up over 20% of the Powertrain workforce less than 5% of Americans in a senior role. At N-2 level of 24 positions only 1 or 2 Americans, at N-1 of 11 positions there are none. Personal Business Plans are how individuals are held accountable for their performance; however, there is no followed standard and evaluations can be arbitrary. One individual may have 4 objectives; whereas, another may have 10 and the one completing 9 of the 10 will get a lower rating than the 1 completing 4.
There is also a visible distinction between how employees at various levels are treated with respect to travel conditions, busines class vs. economy class.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior managment could be more proactive in ensuring that the "Volvo Way" is followed across all sites.

I have been working at Volvo full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good work life balance.
Good amount of short term travel.

    Cons

    1. There is no scientific or number based appraisal process. The appraisal totally depends on perception of one individual called customer (again, a Volvo employee) who would rate you based on his/her interactions with you.
    2. You make good progress if you a malayalee chrisitan, or a malayalee. The work done by these people would always get recognition and all initiatives/committee are usually filled with them. If you don't belong to that race, then you would be made to quit on your own.
    3. The company HR policies are completely based on your manager. Right from getting a pen till onsite assignments , you would need requesting him/her. So, one wrong move with him/her and it would cost your relationship badly. Lot of managers are misfit for the job and totally partial.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting and hiring people just to fill the headcount.
Start talking to employees instead of reading out multi colored ppt's in townhall meetings.
Support departments like HR, Admin and Communication teams are mediocre and needs a revamp. They should be trained to be professional since they are outright rude, non-cooperative and think that they own the place.
Stop shouting 'culture' and start 'walk the talk' .
Implement 360 degree reviews for management and get to know how bad/good, the lower/middle management are.

I have been working at Volvo

    Pros

    Domain exposure
    direct interaction with end user

    Cons

    no IT company like policies
Colleagues are more egoistic than result focused.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

start treating every dept as unique and cater to its needs.
Try to better leverage possibilities by making teams work like ONE Volvo than in silo's , BA/BU concepts.. establish avenues for communications from anyone at anytime , in short a open door policy
Last but not the least , find ways to flatten the organization.. its growing in size in the middle but with no good results.
