Working at Volvo as an intern was an outstanding experience in which I learned several different facets of the industry.

Reliability Engineer Co-op (Former Employee) Hagerstown, MD

ProsI was treated like a regular employee, not as I assumed an intern would be treated. I was invited to many meetings with high level management and again, I was listened to as a regular employee. I learned about several different aspects of the industry. I believe my department had great management, project leaders and director. My internship was renewed. Therefore, I was given an additional 6 months of employment. I was given a good referral when applying to additional positions with in the company.

ConsIt took several weeks before I recieved my company laptop, and during this time I had nothing to do. When I asked what I could do (anything I could read or follow and watch and learn from another employee) I was told "Don't worry about it. You are alright. Just wiat for your computer." Therefore, I basically did not learn anything about my position or the company for those couple of weeks.

Advice to Senior ManagementUtilize your interns to thier full capabilities.

Nice place to study operations management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Hagerstown, MD

Prosinteresting place to work for, people there are very kind and professional, knows their business and is leading the industry

Conslack some key variables such as communication between different departments, technology applied to manufacturing is high but low on supporting teams like logistics and transportations

    Excellent company to work for

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat medical and dental benefits and one of the last companies to offer cash pension plan.
Takes care of employees, does not lay off employees at the slightest whim and fancy.
Management supports your ideas and information flows freely between management and employees.
Personal business plan for employees - excellent way of stating actionable goals to achieve in a year and monitoring them.

ConsSlowest decision making process and after spending countless weeks discussing it in "workshops".
Senior management lacks a backbone to take tough decisions.
Decisions made in Sweden sometime absolutely make no sense.

Advice to Senior Managementmanagement in Sweden: There are awesome guys working in NA. Listen to them so that they feel that thier opinion is being heard.

Good pay at the expense of career advancement

IT Support (Former Employee) Greensboro, NC

ProsVolvo's pay rate appears to more than competitive compared to other organizations. The management is quite competent and very personable, which is more than I can say for many companies. The work environment is relaxed and generally fun; certainly nothing you will dread going to every day.

ConsAt least in my area, there was no clear path to advancement. In many cases you would need to transfer to a different department or take a significantly different job to move to a higher level. If you are unwilling or unable to do this, you will potentially be waiting years for a position to open up.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate more opportunities for employees to advance within the company

Volvo is a great place to work with teriffic benefits

IT Specialist (Current Employee) Greensboro, NC

ProsGreat benefits and a great work life balance.

ConsThe company is so large that it often takes a long time to get things moving in the right direction and often there are multiple groups working on the same things without communication between those groups.

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak projects and objectives down into smaller pieces. Most projects I have seen here are started with many things that need to be done instead of do these 5 things and then move on in order to get to the end goal. What ends up happening is there is a lot of wasted time and effort and the results often end up being poorly implemented.

Project Manager (Current Employee) Bangalore (India)

ProsLarge organization and infinite opportunities to pursue your interests
Fair work life balance for a person who plans his/her work schedule
Exposure to multiple cultures and sites, truly global working environment

ConsSometimes lack personal connect. gets a feeling that you are lost in a crowd
Policies are considered more than personal relationships and needs.
Huge discrepancies in role and remuneration among peers

Advice to Senior ManagementTry hard to break silos and enable people from different functions to work as a team with a common goal

Challenging and interesting workplace provided you are in the right projects

Senior Design Engineer (Former Employee) Bangalore (India)

Pros1)High quality product development work carried out for the emerging market trucks (complete responsibility of development similar to Indian OEMs)
    2) Very good work culture
    3) High brand value
    4) Good work - life balance
    5) On-site opportunities

Cons1) The work quality might not impress you all the time if you are not part of the Asian market PD team
    2) Slower decision making process
    3) Recent organisational structure has narrowed down the scope for GTT, Bangalore to only trucks (reduced development work for Buses and Construction equipment)

Advice to Senior Management1) Please provide a clear future scopepath for the Bangalore site (If it is going to be a application center or a full fledged product development center)
    2) Improve scope for GTT back to buses and other products to make the team a multi-product knowledgeable team
    3) Improve benefits and facilities (Provide benefits back to Bangalore site for whatever it contributes to the group globally)
