I have been working at W. R. Grace full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Not a very nice company to work for.

    Cons

The company still have lots of Nepotism, husbands and wife making big salary, and not doing much, they don't like hiring black people, mostly white people and chinese. Also most of the managers are not doing the work they are getting paid to do. Still have a lot of people consulting, company split but still carrying the same name, with no changes.

    Advice to Management

Hire decent people who could do the work, go and visit the departments and check up on all the back stabbing that is going on at Grace, Also check employees who are getting paid to work five days a week and only working four days week for the past ten years, and not doing any work, because they have bosses who is protecting them.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

pay is adequate, benefits are good, one of the few companies to still offer a defined benefit pension (although that could change with planned separation into 2 companies)

    Cons

This is the most top-heavy, bureaucratic organization I have ever worked for. Management has no trust in their employees. If you aren't a vice president, you will not be making any decisions. It is impossible to get anything done.

    Advice to Management

    Trust your people. Quit micromanaging.

    Pros

Hard to think of any. The pay rate is very high but coupled with cons its not worth it. The safety program is pretty good and they seem to care about the environment.

    Cons

Egotistical incompetent managers who know zilch and have the interpersonal skills of yaks. Completely unrealistic production scheduling goals and god forbid should you fail your shift numbers for ANY reason! I had talked with many employees at other locations and it seemed these issues were everywhere within Grace. Grace's HR department services as their KGB and CIA all rolled into one, don't ever talk to them as it'll fly back to your manager before you hang up the phone.

    Advice to Management

Start unannounced site visits and "look in the corners" and talk to the line supervisors and hourly employees to get a real feel for whats going on in the various plants. Only then will you figure out how messed up things really are.

    I worked at W. R. Grace full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good for starting careers, for youngsters who need to learn a lot. If you are a mediocre person, you probably can stay there for ever.

    Cons

Lots of politics, company exists for happy few at the top. Decisions are taken in favor of those happy few and are therefore opportunistic. Changing their mind all the time. No long term visions synchronized with strategy and company culture. They don't like people who take ownership and accountability. If you are a conscious person, stay away from them!

    Advice to Management

Please, sit down and take a look at the REAL opportunities for your company: employee engagement, walk the talk and live the company values.

When I first hired in I thought Grace would be a great place to work but that turned out not to be the case.

    Pros

The only pro working for Grace is they do offer a competitive salary.

    Cons

Lack of integrity in management. Disconnect between management and employees. Disconnect between corporate management and front line supervisors.

    Advice to Management

Place more stock into advice employees have. They are the life blood of the company. Sometimes ideas that look good on paper are difficult to implement. Seeking advice from then people decisions affect can help make implementation of ideas and strategies more efficient.
