I worked at WMS Gaming full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment to be in...if you're used to normal, boring IT/engineering work, being somewhere with art, music, games, etc., is a welcome change of pace. Company embraced its long history as Williams Corp., who made the pinball machines and video arcade games for generations of youth.

    Cons

Chicago location can be difficult to get to (no easy access from Metra or CTA trains). Company is going through two consecutive buyouts/mergers, and the corporate environment is changing DRAMATICALLY. NO clear picture as to upper management vision, and the old Brian Gamache ways of treating each individual like a valuable commodity are fading away, day by day. When I was laid off, my immediate boss did not know, and I went from my director saying "hey, can I talk to you for a minute?" to being escorted out in less than 10 minutes, with no opportunity to retrieve personal effects or say goodbye to people I'd spent years working with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember who Williams/WMS used to be. Treat people like family, not like budget items.

I have been working at WMS Gaming

    Pros

Was given plenty of room to explore new ideas

    Cons

Fear seems to be imposed from the top down resulting in work being done for the sake of it

I worked at WMS Gaming as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Didn't get treated like an intern; I was working as a contributing member of the team. Got some great refactoring experience and brushed up on my Linux toolset knowledge. Team members were very helpful, and there's a thriving wiki for code documentation and inter-team communication.

    Cons

Lots of inertia on the technology front, particularly with respect to version control. Long-term demographic trends don't really favor slot machine makers. Pending acquisition of Bally may or may not help, but that's something that will take a few years to really play out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Push newer technologies more aggressively.

    Pros

testing the DGM/EGM via G2S is awesome test engineering dutires. The QC test cases on hand are an exceptional QA tool and processes

some personnel are to protective and are reluctant on providing you further detail knowledge for full integration of test coverages for the DGM/EGM

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at WMS Gaming full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits, Pay is comparable to industry standards.Workplace is safe and secure. Nice Facilities and located in the center of Las Vegas.

    Cons

Working 1800 miles away from our Corporate office is logistically a nightmare. We were just informed that 24 people will be laid off affective March 28th. No Loyalty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management Change. The current Management will bring WMS/Sci-Games down. A change needs to be done at the top, and award the workers, not the directors.

I have been working at WMS Gaming full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Benefits, casual environment, flexible hours

    Cons

The few women that DOES work there, are extremely catty. There's one in particular that you need to watch out for. I feel everyone is scared of her. They pre-judge you and will form an alliance against you. Alot of profanity is used amongst the men there in open forums. Senior management doesn't get around to visit with the "little people."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees new and/or OLD. Understand whats going on in your own department thats right under your nose - and actually do something about it if its causing friction between employees.

    Pros

The company is great. They care about your fitness. They have a great cafeteria. They generally want you to be happy.

    Cons

There are way too many managers. I'm not kidding. There will sometimes be 5-10 developers to a project and 30 managers. Not a lot of work or innovation ever gets through.
