    THE BOREDOM OF REPETITION WORK

I worked at WSP Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This company is formerly known as WSP Cantor Seinuk, or Cantor Seinuk. Firm is working on major high-rise buildings in New York. The company is located at 45th Street in New York.
You will be very likely working on challenging projects. Good company, if you want to do one thing repetitively. You are never alone at work at 7 p.m. Close to subway. Great spreadsheets - fool proofed. You do not have to come to work before 9:30 am, you can (have to) stay longer anyway.

    Cons

High stress environment, big segregation (analysis - lateral members, design - gravity members, management, concrete, steel), no opportunity to become well-rounded engineer, analysis is mostly limited to input into Etabs software, design is mostly limited to column rundown, slab and footing design.

When negotiating your salary take into account that the work you will be required to finish will take much more time than 40 hours per week. End year bonuses were a big disappointment.
Four of the Senior Vice Presidents left the company in 2014. Resent promotions of people without PE license and little knowledge about design proved that there are no rules in regards to promotions. Company would hire new people into higher management positions; however they are not offering their loyal long-term employees opportunity to grow professionally. Company prefers to hire engineers with any kind of experience and gives only from time to time opportunity to graduates.

Do not show you are capable to design quickly and efficiently, you will get stuck in the Design Engineer position and your peers that cannot design will become more appreciated Project Managers. You are going to get easier promoted if you show to the upper management that you can be pushy. Amount of work completed by you does not matter, what matters is that you make other people work really hard and make them work longer hours. Crazy deadlines: you are working on your project deadline or you are helping somebody else with a deadline.

    Drafting department is understaffed.

    Pros

A good place to start your career and gain experience. There's plenty of work.
    They're hiring.

    Cons

The deadlines between submissions are too close!
Dull working environment. Not a good place to be if you would like a little work life balance, but the new office VP is making strides to improve the office morale and environment.
    Easy to become burned out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Deadlines between submissions need to be scheduled more appropriately.
Offer more flexibility for work options and perhaps the turnover rate will decrease.

I have been working at WSP Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

This company has great benefits and the coworkers are excellent. The company also seems to put forth a good effort to streamline departments.

    Cons

Within the company you will find no structure or oganization. This is several departments across the board. When I came aboard the HR department was not very together. My paycheck was wrong and I had a hard time getting my benefits started. When I came to work in my department - trainning was non-exsisted. Not because management did not have time- but because management had no procedures in place to follow. This seems to be the norm here at WSP NY - I figured this out becuase like I was saying with my paycheck and benefits- several calls was made and nothing was done to correct the mistake. Even after speaking with the manager (T.V) she still managed to overpay me - Oh well, I guess I can use the extra cash

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get new management that has a background in the department they oversee

    Pros

Growing fast, young senior management. Working with outher employees accross Canada.

    Cons

In Atlantic Canada there is no room to grow any further in your career. Work is slow and there are no interesting projects to work on. The work is not challenging and I am board most days. I haven't learned anything new since working here and I feel disconnected from the company. Most days I feel I'm bashing my head against a wall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If people show a passion for their work and are excited about building their group to help the company, let them run with it and take a chance. Stop putting up road blocks. You should make it easier for them not harder.

I have been working at WSP Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great people at most levels
Some fantastic, iconic projects on the books
Exposure to international projects and expertise

    Cons

Promotion of talkers over doers has created a level of upper management that has no real insight of how the business generates income.
Focus is on accounting instead of engineering. Fatal in the long term for any business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Concentrate on delivering technical excellence, financial success stems from this alone. Cutting costs to improve the bottom line as the primary business strategy will end in disaster.

    Pros

    - Great office location in the heart of central London
    - Decent team and amicable office
    - Enthusiasm in general

    Cons

    - Repetitive tasks, not very dynamic
    - Skills and abilities not allowed to developed within the rigid structure of activities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Working closer with employees, building their skills and interests. The outsourcing of intelligence seemed to be quite a problem, even when specialisation could be built among existing staff.
