The Pros Far Outweigh the Cons

Account Executive (Current Employee) Lake Oswego, OR

ProsFlexible, open cube door leadership. Ability to try on many different hats. Chance to work on comms for a major Fortune 100 company. Independent which is especially important in times of economic trouble. Some unique benefits.

ConsThey knock you down a title level or two when you come in the door...many people with experience have observed this. This makes the promotion dance even harder than usual because you always feel as if you're two measures behind the music.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet creative in the way you staff and structure your accounts. Keep that open dialogue going. Push out the leaders who are not keeping up their end of the bargain. To that end, start a better system for upward feedback. Don't forget about Pam Edstrom--she inspires us and should be more front and center.

Account Director (Current Employee) Lake Oswego, OR

ProsThere is no other agency or internal corporate PR team that has the influence skills and quality standards of Waggener Edstrom. They have the best people in the industry - from senior leadership to interns and ACs. If you start at Waggener Edstrom, you will be a better PR practioner than if you work anywhere else in the world.

    ConsEveryone works so, so hard.

great place to grow skills, especially if you want to work hard.

Account Director (Current Employee) Bellevue, WA

Prosgreat focus on creativity and thinking through what is next from a public relations standpoint. And with this is a focus on training and educating people, both formally and informally about what they sholuld be doing to keep growing in the art of communications.
    new ideas welcome.
    good collaboration and information sharing.
There are a ton of very smart people who work here -- and they are willing to pitch in and help. It is not very hard to set up a brainstorm to tackle a problem -- and get really good response, from execs all the way up and down.

Conslots of hard work...it's a service industry, which means there can be long hours -- people have to figure out where the boundaries are and then enforce them. There is a lot of talk about work / life balance, and some good programs in place, but at the end there still are clients, and if there is work to get done on a weekend or holiday, it needs to get done. People can set their own limits, but have to be hard core about what they can/can't do. There are times when it is hard to see how decisions get made.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the focus on talent, not just for people who have been there a while, but those coming up too.

World class, high standards, incredible ability to influence major brands and markets

Senior Vice President (Current Employee) Bellevue, WA

ProsIncredible talent, incredible clients, toughest business problems out there to solve, focus on innovation. There are smart people at every level to learn from. Sincere commitment to changing markets and impacting doing good in the world. Tons of advancement opportunities if you earn them. Successful employees are drivers, curious, proactive, positive, passionate and want to make an impact.

ConsGreat clients expect great counsel - always have to be on your game and have a thick skin. But it is well worth it! There is a significant change afoot around re-thinking the way communications happens with emerging digital delivery mechanisms and influence traveling in new ways. Change can be tough, and some people aren't comfortable with the level of dynamism necessary to ride out the change. So that could be tough for some.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to focus on giving back and innovation

Great benefits, fun people, exciting work.

Senior Specialist (Current Employee) Bellevue, WA

ProsThis agency has a really great benefits package and the working conditions are top notch. It's easy to see that Waggener Edstrom realizes that its people are its most important asset. It's easy to advance at Waggener Edstrom if you're smart and willing to work hard. This agency is winning some big-hitting clients lately and the work keeps getting more and more interesting. With the agency growing all around the world, there's even an opportunity to join an "exchange program" to live and work in an office in a different country. Maybe I'll try Singapore.

ConsBe ready to work hard. Even though the work is interesting, you could easily get burned out if you're expecting a cake walk. It's a good thing the agency offers such a generous vacation package for new employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep growing the company around the world. Promote the agency more. If you get the name out there, more of the best and brightest talent will come here and those already here will feel even better about working here.

    Results-driven company with a heart.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWaggener Edstrom has smart, engaged management that approached clients with strategic, value-added ideas, knows how to manage employees and cares about giving back to the community and to the world.
Melissa Waggener is visionary and a strategic asset
    Pam Edstrom is brilliant
It's a privately-held firm, which is an advantage
Clients respect and listen to their account teams

ConsThe only downside is that the company is not more well-known in the industry and with potential clients. Waggener Edstrom has made great strides in this area and has a strong marketing team that is getting the message out.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to build in the financial focus without losing the employee orientation and goal for developing employees and great managers within the company. It's what makes the Waggener Edstrom stand out from the rest.
