A wonderful jumping-off point and learning opportunity for junior level employees

I worked at Waggener Edstrom Communications

    Pros

As a junior-level employee Waggener Edstrom is a great place to begin a career and gain experience and knowledge under some of the brightest minds in PR. The growth and learning opportunities were easily accessible and encouraged and the feedback I received from higher-ups while I was there have helped shape me into the better PR professional that I am today.

    Cons

One of the strongest downsides of working at WE is the amount of red tape and process that everything requires. But, of course, that is something to be expected in such a large organization with offices all over the world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the senior management at WE is doing a great job leading the company. I'm sure they're already working at this 110%, but I would strongly encourage trying to win the business of more diverse clients. I realize that Microsoft is the bread and butter of the organization, but there is so much more to the agency than what they're doing with Microsoft and honestly, I'm not confident in Microsoft's ability to stay relevant in the tech industry.

I have been working at Waggener Edstrom Communications

    Pros

Flexible, open cube door leadership. Ability to try on many different hats. Chance to work on comms for a major Fortune 100 company. Independent which is especially important in times of economic trouble. Some unique benefits.

    Cons

They knock you down a title level or two when you come in the door...many people with experience have observed this. This makes the promotion dance even harder than usual because you always feel as if you're two measures behind the music.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get creative in the way you staff and structure your accounts. Keep that open dialogue going. Push out the leaders who are not keeping up their end of the bargain. To that end, start a better system for upward feedback. Don't forget about Pam Edstrom--she inspires us and should be more front and center.

I have been working at Waggener Edstrom Communications

    Pros

great focus on creativity and thinking through what is next from a public relations standpoint. And with this is a focus on training and educating people, both formally and informally about what they sholuld be doing to keep growing in the art of communications.
    new ideas welcome.
    good collaboration and information sharing.
There are a ton of very smart people who work here -- and they are willing to pitch in and help. It is not very hard to set up a brainstorm to tackle a problem -- and get really good response, from execs all the way up and down.

    Cons

lots of hard work...it's a service industry, which means there can be long hours -- people have to figure out where the boundaries are and then enforce them. There is a lot of talk about work / life balance, and some good programs in place, but at the end there still are clients, and if there is work to get done on a weekend or holiday, it needs to get done. People can set their own limits, but have to be hard core about what they can/can't do. There are times when it is hard to see how decisions get made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the focus on talent, not just for people who have been there a while, but those coming up too.

There is no other agency or internal corporate PR team that has the influence skills and quality standards of Waggener Edstrom. They have the best people in the industry - from senior leadership to interns and ACs. If you start at Waggener Edstrom, you will be a better PR practioner than if you work anywhere else in the world.

Waggener Edstrom always, always, always keeps an eye on client satisfaction but finding, growing, and keeping top talent is always the clear priority.

    Cons

    Everyone works so, so hard.

I have been working at Waggener Edstrom Communications

    Pros

Incredible talent, incredible clients, toughest business problems out there to solve, focus on innovation. There are smart people at every level to learn from. Sincere commitment to changing markets and impacting doing good in the world. Tons of advancement opportunities if you earn them. Successful employees are drivers, curious, proactive, positive, passionate and want to make an impact.

    Cons

Great clients expect great counsel - always have to be on your game and have a thick skin. But it is well worth it! There is a significant change afoot around re-thinking the way communications happens with emerging digital delivery mechanisms and influence traveling in new ways. Change can be tough, and some people aren't comfortable with the level of dynamism necessary to ride out the change. So that could be tough for some.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to focus on giving back and innovation

I have been working at Waggener Edstrom Communications

    Pros

This agency has a really great benefits package and the working conditions are top notch. It's easy to see that Waggener Edstrom realizes that its people are its most important asset. It's easy to advance at Waggener Edstrom if you're smart and willing to work hard. This agency is winning some big-hitting clients lately and the work keeps getting more and more interesting. With the agency growing all around the world, there's even an opportunity to join an "exchange program" to live and work in an office in a different country. Maybe I'll try Singapore.

    Cons

Be ready to work hard. Even though the work is interesting, you could easily get burned out if you're expecting a cake walk. It's a good thing the agency offers such a generous vacation package for new employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep growing the company around the world. Promote the agency more. If you get the name out there, more of the best and brightest talent will come here and those already here will feel even better about working here.
