Cutting health care, staffing and safety is how Wal-Mart keeps their profits up.

Site to Store (Current Employee)
Bellingham, WA

I have been working at Walmart Stores full-time for more than 7 years

ProsIt was very informative. I want to go into Corrections, so learning how to spot a lie, abuse, theft and corruption were good training for my future career goals. I learned how to deal with "problem customers" and how Customer Service means brown nosing whoever screams loudest instead of those that really deserve it. But for the most part, the customers are normal, everyday people who are watching their budgets. They're good people. Some of them just dress like they're going to a costume party every day.

ConsStaffing is habitually low, product is therefore under stocked habitually and the associates only care because they don't want to get in trouble. The atmosphere is typically hostile and associates are afraid to exercise their rights. Wal-Mart hates bad press but they're certainly fodder for a lot of it. 80% of employees are on welfare and there's little to no chance of change anytime soon. What we can expect from Wal-Mart soon: Associates will be singing "I owe my soul to the company store" and meaning it.

Advice to Senior Management"Listen to your workers, they're your best idea generators." Right now, Sam Walton's kids can fan themselves with how quickly he's rolling over in his grave. Keep your workers happy and they'll make sure you succeed. Cutting health care, hours/staffing safety and freedoms are the quickest way to get people against you. Fix it and Wal-Mart will be what Sam Walton always intended and everybody will win.

Wal-Mart experience .

Market Manager (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Walmart Stores full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWal-Mart has wonderful benefits and has changed the store management routine to make it much more friendly than when I first became part of store management.

ConsIf you ever leave a management position, even to take care of family, you have a slim to no chance of ever getting back into a management position again. The basic values established by Sam Walton have been for the most part abandoned. It' become just another mega corporation only concerned with the bottom line profit and share holders. Associates seem to be an expendable low priority asset anymore.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers that have a stake in their position. I have too often seen managers that are just marching along to get a check. I can say this from 13 years of experience with the company.

Ask for too much work, low pay, little to no recognition

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
Guilford, CT

I worked at Walmart Stores full-time for more than a year

ProsTeaches you a lot about how to deal with a hostile work environment and angry customers.

ConsManagement always find something wrong, even if you give 110% they want 120%. If someone else slacks rather than try and get them to pick up, they will try to make the better employees cover for them.

Not enough staff to handle customer volume, especially in the floor associates area.

Times your every move from the moment you punch in until you get to the register, how long your on your register.

Doesn't give a crap about when you request time off, makes Holidays mandatory and if you dont show up you get penalized.

The blind leading the blind

Door Greeter (Former Employee)
New Braunfels, TX

I worked at Walmart Stores part-time for less than a year

ProsMany jobs available, hire without extensive schooling, training doesn't take long, good temporary income opportunity

Cons-Managers are generally not qualified to lead employees (employees tend to be treated as children or talked down to as if they are not as smart as the underqualified managers)
-Job security is not great
-No extra cosideration given to employees if it doesn't help Walmart's bottom line (after being employed there for 8 months with 0 missed days and only a couple of days requested off throughout, they refused to accomodate my schedule so that I could continue working there)
-When I called their bluff and quit, they admitted they should have accommodated me.

Advice to Senior ManagementAccommodate your good workers. Let the ones that call in "sick" every week go. Recognize individual contributions and stop treating everyone like sheep. If you have a worker who does not require babysitting, as most do, try to keep them.

good for advancement

Overnight Stocker (Former Employee)
Streamwood, IL

I worked at Walmart Stores part-time for more than a year

ProsWalmart has great opportunity for advancement in the company for those employees whom display an almost perfect work ethic and plays the managers pet

Conskeeps employees at part time for an extensive amount of time so that no benefits are awarded. management is constantly hassling you even if the shift is moving at a good pace

Advice to Senior Managementgive employees the recognition that they deserve. allot people are non-compliant due to managements constant criticism even when stocking is making good time

ASM

Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)
Antioch, CA

I have been working at Walmart Stores as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsHigh average starting salary, three days on three days off rotations.

Conswork long hours 12 plus a day on call, pressure and stress are always at a high, the company wants unrealistic, unattainable, time bound goals to be completed with out fail. company does not provide the necessary tools to get the job accomplished.

Advice to Senior Managementneed to think more Pro associate lets take a step back and remember Sam Walton's beliefs and values to his Associates.

For me, working at this Walmart store was stressful, exhausting and depressing.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Fort Collins, CO

I worked at Walmart Stores full-time for more than a year

ProsI was fortunate to secure a position quickly after applying online, and I needed a job immediately. I was also fortunate to get a position in one of the highest paid store departments, beginning at a higher pay grade than many new employees.

ConsEspecially lower level managers are quite young and naively sold on the corporate agenda. Their demographics seem to perpetuate the lacking democracy, creative problem solving and prioritizing moral or ethical principles over store/corporate policies or higher management agendas. For most of its employees, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. does not pay a living wage in today's economy. This is

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport unionization and union operations of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. employees. The corporation has too great an impact on economic, social and community issues, both in the U.S. and globally, for unions to be blocked at the store and other lower levels of the corporation. Blocking or discouraging unions is a disservice to critical causes, American and worldwide, and ultimately it's self-destructive, even for store managers.
