    Pros

Gave me invaluable background in performing arts business; taught me how to navigate a large corporate setting; allowed me freedom to develop my skills; free CDs and concerts sometimes

    Cons

Recorded music as an industry is majorly restructuring so it was clear it wasn't a place where I was going to get a job for what I wanted to do. My managers were a bit petty and unprofessional at times, I think because they were stressed about their job stability. In general didn't seem to be a future-oriented place to work.

Interning at Warner was great if you are independent, otherwise you can find another place to get coffee at.

    Pros

Networking! As an intern, you have access to contacts all over the music business; use them to your advantage!

    Cons

Co-workers and management are not very helpful; you are the bottom of the bottom, and they treat you like you will be replaced in three months. No real hands on training for anything practical in the music business; everything I learned, I learned because I sat in their office for an hour and picked their brains.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your interns more; you're going to be working for one once "The Big Three" shrink to "The Big One." Bye bye music industry!

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in New York, NY

    Pros

Music, creativity, work-life balance and location.

    Cons

Experience in the industry is moot; they want MBAs with attitudes over experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MBAs have their place, but don't get rid of all the experience for a 5 year model from someone who never worked in the industry.

    Pros

Easy work atmosphere, good work life balance, friendly co-workers, survived the downturn level, transition to digital. Good transition from local to regional to global model and new management making new investments after years of cost cutting and downsizing. The core values have remained the same and overall employee friendly policies and lot of trust and empowerment despite limited career growth

    Cons

change of ownership and managements several times, too many cuts and depleted workforce, pessimism on future, politics. Outlook has remained grim for more than a decade

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

synergy across business units, career path and growth opportunities

Current Employee - Public Relations Intern in Nashville, TN

    Pros

We got to attend some fun events that WMNashvile set for their artists for free!

    Cons

I barely saw my supervisors during my internship. They were always out of the office and they did not give clear instructions on how to do a project. When we finished the project and turned it in, they scrutinized us for doing it completely wrong and had no mercy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want something done a certain way, be specific in the first place!

Easy, good company, but not enough learning and too much busywork

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

easygoing people, slow paced, looks good on resume, good for future opportunities

    Cons

too much menial work for interns, unpaid, lack of innovation and technological advancements, didn't learn much

  10.

    Drawbacks did not outweigh advantages

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in New York, NY

    Pros

    -Music focused
-SOME people are very easy and fun to work with
    -Casual environment (dress,speech,practices,etc.)
-Nature of the work is interesting because you're dealing with the end product of your favorite artists/bands

    Cons

-All levels of staff are under-qualified, but especially the management/directors
    -No pay for interns
-Not as great of as a learning experience as advertised
-Outdated information systems (ie. use excel for databases & not access)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Have some standards when hiring. Just because people know people in the industry does not mean that they are qualified to be managers or directors.

-Throw away your internship program, and then recreate it. The current one is NOT working, and does not encourage a career in the music industry, in fact, it discourages it.

-As casual as the environment may be, WMG should focus on being a top-notch firm, and in turn, top-notch results will be realized. Hiring staff with less then impressive qualifications and poor managerial skills is NOT the way to get there.
