Good IT, sad to see company failed

    Solution Architect (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsGood IT culture, top people in IT department, openess to suggestions, great work office environment and location in downtown Seattle

ConsToo sad the company collapsed and was taken over by Chase -- top IT people were cut, while at downturn limited Software Develpment process no new features

Advice to Senior ManagementSad to see top IT people gone -- not IT's fault, look at Chase -- top business management and phylosophy, which is the key

    Was good while it lasted

    Financial Risk Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsGreat place for those who enjoy being challenged and surpassing expectations

Provides the sense that one was part of a small team even though WaMu was a fairly large corporation

Flexibility in how challenges are approached, how work is delivered

    ConsIt now no longer exists

Advice to Senior ManagementLet's make sure to learn from our mistakes and use this lesson to ensure that we help whoever it is that employs us in the future avoid the same mistakes.

Had its issues but overall a decent work experience

    Vice President, Marketing (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

    Pros- Good Work/Life balance supported
    - Challenging Work, learned new things
    - Location

Cons- Depending on area and senior manager, growth opportunities were limited
    - Performance bonus impacted by other WaMu divisions - eg Home Loans dismal performance
    - Project process had too many steps and took too long
    - Political environment -- after work buddy club

Advice to Senior Management- The company is now gone...so no advice

Washington Mutual was a great place to work...until the end

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Pleasanton, CA

ProsI felt like I worked with my extended family and I was able to chart my own course in a big way.

ConsThe end, when the bank literally failed (or was allowed to fail, unlike the other "big banks"), was rough. Seeing stock gains vanish into thin air was tough to take, plus being acquired for next to nothing by Chase was hard to swallow. After the take over, all of the good reasons for working there disappeared.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey're all gone, for the most part...I guess in the future, don't put all of your eggs in the same (mortgage) basket and listen to the FDIC, Fed, and Treasury when they tell you to sell...even if you think they're wrong.

It was good while it lasted

    Technology Group Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsInitially it was a very open and available management structure, then senior management changed and the commmunication slowed to almost none.

ConsLargest bank failure in american history... what else can you say. The management philosophy changed and it was palpable and unfortunate.

Advice to Senior ManagementReconsider the path that was put forth on the outsourcing model. Following the rest of the industry would lead to everyone being the same, retain some competative advantage by retaining in house technology resources.

Great place to work until it went under

    Public Relations Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

Pros- Excellent overall corporate culture. Employees took pride & genuinely cared about the organization's reputation, performance, products and services.
    - Compensation ($67k/yr. to start + performance bonus) and benefits (medical/dental/vision/401k) were extremely competitive/generous.
    - Really enjoyed all the people/groups I worked/interacted with. All were very courteous, professional.
    - WaMu Tower (HQ) provided exceptional work enviornment.
    - Excellent work/life balance; emphasis on having a personal life outside work.

Cons- Bad loan practices and rapid expantion ultimately lead to organization's downfall.
    - Work environment, corporate culture became increasingly stressful/chaotic, making it exceedingly difficult to maintain focus, complete assignments.
    - Communication/transparency between organization departments was tepid at best, which made collaboration on projects difficult at times.
    - Many project proposals/initiatives were shut down by upper management as financial difficulties increased.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot applicable since Washington Mutual was seized and ultimately sold to JPMorgan Chase, resulting in the closure of most of the organizaiton's operational sites, including Seattle HQ.

A great company to work for had it not met its end.

    Analyst (Former Employee)

    Pros- Good salary, great benefits.
    - Pressure from work is minimal.
    - Not much office politics, nice people and good environment.

Cons- Very limited to team-specific work functions, not much opportunity to learn about the big picture.
    - Work can get routine and repetitive, not enough adhoc projects to gain exposure to new things.

    WaMu - loss of values

    Senior Technology Manager (Current Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsGood opportunity for growth. I was promoted 4 times in 6 years. I switched jobs and really learned a lot.

ConsWaMu was a good place to work but once they lost sight of the company values (fair, caring, human, dynamic and driven) they really floundered.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't forget about the employee. We are what makes this company, not all of the bad loans that were writen.

Corporate office was a great place to work.

    Business Analyst II (Former Employee)
    Irvine, CA

ProsGiven a lot of opportunities to grow and try other roles
Management was very understanding when time was needed off or personal reasons and many in my department worked flexible schedules or were allowed to work from home part time.

ConsUpper management was clueless a lot of times
Continual lay offs during my entire 5 year span there
Raises were always minimal. 3% was "great"
Could have had better career paths so that employees had something to work towards

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat to say.....I think they have learned their mistakes (hopefully)
