    Teller (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsWashington mutual was a great place for a college student pursuing a business degree to start a career in a business environment, specifically in finance or economics. They were well structured and had proper training for individuals, regardless of their role, to succeed in their job.

ConsDifficult to move up in the company. It appeared as if seniority took precedence to talent. My Branch Manager was an assistant for 16 years before she got a shot to run her own branch.

Advice to Senior ManagementAvoid hostile takeover

Overall , it was a good experience

    Default Collections Specialist (Former Employee)
    Jacksonville, FL

ProsI like the work hours, the training, and the team of people I worked with (both employee and management).

ConsPart of my job was to collect from people that were going through some major hardships, i.e. loss of home , loss of a love one, and/or personal despair. That made it difficult to process my job.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone

    Crazy but fun

    Senior Technology Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsLots of room to learn, plenty of opportunity. Lots of collaboration and the chance to work on completely new projects. I really enjoyed my time there, and learned a TON. Plenty of opportunity to work with senior management closely, if you were working on strategically aligned projects.

ConsAbsolutely crazy as everything crashed... no work/life balance, disregard for long term business reality in pursuit of short term immediate financial gain.

    It's a job, not a career

    Personal Banker (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsDespite some interesting growth opportunities, I'd call it a job and not a career. Decent pay, high turnover. Upper movement determined on office politics rather than merit. But I suppose that's true at many places.

ConsUpper management pushes some questionable growth numbers. Is it possible for a small branch to open 100+ new accounts in a month? Definitely. Are those accounts really needed and necessary in a small community? Probably not.

Advice to Senior ManagementA mission statement should be a mission statement, not a PR device to brainwash employees and consumers alike into thinking poor money management, big fees, and behavior inconsistent with said mission statement.

Constoo much red tape and hard to get point across

Great bank and opportunity, depending on your position

    Recruiting Assistant (Current Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

    ProsFocus on work-life balance
Young company, with most employees in the 18-45 age range
    Good benefits
    Frequent 1:1 meetings with management
    Lots of communication

ConsPerformance reviews and expectations not in line with those advertized.
Performance reviews were changed so that the vast majority of employees received a "3" out of 5, which meant doing your job well, but not enough for even a cost of living raise.
Salaries for employees varied widely and sometimes had jumps of up to 50% of base salaries.
Salaries are not in line with corporate standards for areas with higher cost of living.
    Frequent micromanagement
No margin for any error, which was, of course impossible, even 97% was not good enough.

ConsRigid work life balance outlook. Few tele-workers.

    Great while it lasted

    Senior Program Manager (Former Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsOne of the most humane places I have worked. The people were great.

ConsChaotic decision making at times added to stress.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo bad the offer from Dimon and Co wasn't accepted in Spring, 09- maybe some of the jobs could have been saved.
