I have been working at Washington Mutual full-time

    Pros

They were always changing things up, good or bad, depending on how much you like change. Tried to be costumer-centric. Held quarterly meetings to give employees the state of the company and keep them informed. Decent salaries and benefits, held annual employee appreciation events

    Cons

When we got by JPMC, although at least we got decent layoff packages and job services.

    Pros

    Local, professional, upward career opportunities.

    Cons

Working at HQ (big). Oh, and it failed.

I worked at Washington Mutual part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Washington mutual was a great place for a college student pursuing a business degree to start a career in a business environment, specifically in finance or economics. They were well structured and had proper training for individuals, regardless of their role, to succeed in their job.

    Cons

Difficult to move up in the company. It appeared as if seniority took precedence to talent. My Branch Manager was an assistant for 16 years before she got a shot to run her own branch.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Avoid hostile takeover

I worked at Washington Mutual full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I like the work hours, the training, and the team of people I worked with (both employee and management).

    Cons

Part of my job was to collect from people that were going through some major hardships, i.e. loss of home , loss of a love one, and/or personal despair. That made it difficult to process my job.

I worked at Washington Mutual full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of room to learn, plenty of opportunity. Lots of collaboration and the chance to work on completely new projects. I really enjoyed my time there, and learned a TON. Plenty of opportunity to work with senior management closely, if you were working on strategically aligned projects.

    Cons

Absolutely crazy as everything crashed... no work/life balance, disregard for long term business reality in pursuit of short term immediate financial gain.

I worked at Washington Mutual full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Despite some interesting growth opportunities, I'd call it a job and not a career. Decent pay, high turnover. Upper movement determined on office politics rather than merit. But I suppose that's true at many places.

    Cons

Upper management pushes some questionable growth numbers. Is it possible for a small branch to open 100+ new accounts in a month? Definitely. Are those accounts really needed and necessary in a small community? Probably not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A mission statement should be a mission statement, not a PR device to brainwash employees and consumers alike into thinking poor money management, big fees, and behavior inconsistent with said mission statement.

Current Employee - Recruiting Assistant in Santa Rosa, CA

I have been working at Washington Mutual full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Focus on work-life balance
Young company, with most employees in the 18-45 age range
    Good benefits
    Frequent 1:1 meetings with management
    Lots of communication

    Cons

Performance reviews and expectations not in line with those advertized.
Performance reviews were changed so that the vast majority of employees received a "3" out of 5, which meant doing your job well, but not enough for even a cost of living raise.
Salaries for employees varied widely and sometimes had jumps of up to 50% of base salaries.
Salaries are not in line with corporate standards for areas with higher cost of living.
    Frequent micromanagement
No margin for any error, which was, of course impossible, even 97% was not good enough.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
