    I worked at Waste Management

    Pros

Many of the line employees are dedicated and have a commitment to the environment.

    Cons

Management is out of touch and manages the company only to meet investor expectations to keep raising the dividend. As a result company lacks long term vision and fails to execute on any long term strategies. In recent lay offs, I personally know a contractor who was rendered homeless. Considering the company was profitable and the largest share holder is Bill and Melinda Gates, this struck me as heartless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a vision or get out of the way for someone who does. I suspect the latter vs the former as a better solution.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

They do offer a good (not great) benefits package. 3 weeks vacation after 5 years. 15% annual bonus. Health coverage is ok.

    Cons

The company is focused on Wall Street, not their own customers. Employees are told to be advocates of the customer while the company does everything in its power to show that they do not care about their customers. Or their employees, for that matter.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

They have a great workforce, the people that work there are some of the hardest working, loyal and talented people. Also due to size Waste Management is able to offer benefits that are better than most other companies.

    Cons

The ridiculous hours that have to be worked in order to hit deadlines. The amount of work is unrealistic to have any kind of balance between work and family. There is a big part of management support that is simply not there, especially in accounting where there is the greatest need. While the workforce is loyal, WM is not, they just laid off close to 1,000 corporate employees and the area is believed to be next. Very little opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Completely restructure management, provide more insight and training. Do not just throw things onto the employees and leave things for them to figure out, especially when there is already so much pressure and emphasis put on deadlines. I cannot state enough how lacking in management the company is at the business level and even more out of touch at the corporate.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The front line and local management staff are fantastic people with a lot to offer. You can always find something new and exciting to work on and most non-corporate positions provide a good environment with good people.

    Cons

Senior Management members treat people as objects, not people. They can ride people hard for success, asking them to contribute all their time and energy to help the company and then turn around the next minute and show you the door. Many decisions are made at the Senior level without engaging the people that actually perform the affected functions. It's viewed as arrogant, misinformed and uncaring by the victims.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just like you worry about your profitable customers getting fed up with mistakes and poor treatment, you need to worry about your best employees reaching that same tipping point. Trim the fat and let go of people if they are not providing value, but don't take the attitude that no one provides value and is worth saving. So many decisions are made that leave the majority of us scratching our heads and wondering why? Engage your contributors. We have a lot to offer.

    Pros

MY Manager was great, but because all managers differ, if you have a bad one....you are not going to be there a long time.

    Cons

Secretive. Lie to the customers. "Legally" steal money from people. Favoritism. They do not treat everyone the same.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop favoring people so obviously. Most people would rather be out of the limelight, but it is bothersome to see someone that doesn't deserve to be there-catored to.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Pay and benefits were decent.

    Cons

Management had no respect for employees. Very long hours for salary workers with the management attitude of if you don't like it we can replace you. Promotions based on who you knew not on qualifications.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The employees are not cattle but humans who need a work life balance.

I worked at Waste Management full-time

    Pros

Waste and recycling isn't going away. In operations, there should be some job security. The management is definitely focused on keeping the stockholders happy.

    Cons

Long term improvements and goals are hard to hold on to; focus on 90 day measures seem to dominate the decision making process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be fooled by comparing apples and oranges. Understand the real affect your decisions will make on the long-term health of the company.

Hours are GOOD! Benefits are descent. No weekends hours. Ability to transfer to other work sites.

    Cons

Lack of training. Holding employees accountable to expectations that have not been clearly explained. Changing commission structure mid-stream.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
