I worked at Waste Management full-time

    Pros

The people I worked with were very nice. From what I have seen, with the exception of the inevitable outlier, employees are truly there to do a good job. They take pride in their work. For a large company, it is relatively well structured.

    Cons

C-level management is not in touch with the lower tiers of the company. Massive restructuring eliminates good talent across the board. You get the sense that they have somewhat of an 'ivory tower' mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If restructuring is your goal, please be more selective, or you will lose excellent employees (possibly to your competitors). Trimming fat is one thing, but cutting off an entire arm is another.

    I worked at Waste Management

    Pros

Decent Benefits (with them steadily increasing in cost)
Coworkers are normally easy to interact with
The work culture has been formed in such a way as you are working toward a great cause.
There was a good amount of collaboration between departments.

    Cons

The pay is normally not competitive with the market.
Bonuses and raises were cut. Coupled with the pay not being competitive, there is not a real incentive to stay.
It seemed like the worker bees were always taking one for the team, while senior management pulled their golden parachutes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay market rates
Provide a solid career path with specific goals.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

401k, stock and benefits Overtime is good
Insurance is ok. Good career job

    Cons

Management hides stuff from corporate. Raises are horrible. They go down every year and the post how much they profited in a year but raise goes down. Employees are not appreciated for their work. Raises are supposed to go by performance but everyone gets the same. How is that fair?

They want promote you on experience and time u been there they tell you that it's based off your hourly pay. How you gonna get their with a 2% raise. I've been here a long time and is still at bottom.

You might think I need to change title at top after you read this. I love my job just wish WM will open their eyes and see the things going wrong in this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You already have good employees. Doing them like this makes them not to care about anything.

    Pros

Overtime is encouraged and always available. Vacation days are about the same as most large companies. 2 weeks per year. You can transfer to different locations throughout the US

    Cons

Sometimes you can get really dirty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Implement more safety protocols.

I have been working at Waste Management

    Pros

steady job good people to work with we go the extra mile for our customers just don't want to lose it

    Cons

got to watch what you report to hr turn in upper management for conduct issue found in my favor now the one who got in trouble decides what i get paid a hour and has said i won't see top pay as long as they decide what i get even when company gives out raises and made sure to say this when no one else was around to hear it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

you need to look at people job records and make sure management isn't cheating people out of what the company says it is going to them for raises people have been there a long time work for a goal of being at the top one day and to have management tell you they decide your fate instead of the time you put into the company is a big let down

I worked at Waste Management full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The steady hours and over time are great, the workers are generally nice though I indirectly worked for waste management (staffing agency) I didn't quite get the full feel to work for the company. From my experience its only for those that can tolerate dirty and possibly hazardous environments. Safety standards are very good they make sure everyone is aware of all the hazards you can find on sort lines and what to expect, they have set guidelines on how to keep your work place safe.

Staffing agencies allow you to get your foot through the door to work for the company.

    - Time n half over time
    - Good hours
    - Great safety standards
    - OSHA certified
    - Safety equipment provided
    - Training on all aspects of recycling and maintenance
    - Great management awesome co-workers

    Cons

Like I said earlier if your not ready for a very dirty hard labor job, this is not your gig. The work can be pretty tiring and exhausting depending on the lines you work on. Pre-sort would have to be the toughest line as residential and commercial trash is found on this line which can include a lot of things weighing 50lbs+, that's just one of the lines they are several more which won't be covered here. Let's just say this line is the hardest there are easier ones.
Depending on how you got employed to Waste Management I'd say the easiest way to earn you spot is through a staffing agency, keep in mind you might be work with ex-con's and what not. Other than that it doesn't mean you can't get any promotions or be hired onto the company, you can.

    - Nasty and sometimes gut wrenching things dumped into lines
    - Toxic and biological hazards
    - Heavy work load
    - Decent pay (could be better)
    - No health insurance benefits (for the staffing agency not WM)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are a couple of things I would like for them to change is wages, often times we had our machine belts rip off or our whole recycling system would fail and we would be sent home. There should be some pay raise or some fail safe to that so we don't waste so much gas getting to work. If our system would run a bit slow to prevent constant down time on our lines would help us pick stuff off the line better and not strain ourselves. I got seriously injured twice and it has effected me almost permanently due to the way we ran our system it was just too fast to accommodate the productivity (they were sooo far behind on productivity rates). They need a better analyst for this or try a different approach to solve these kinds of issues.
