    I worked at Waste Management

    Pros

Waste Management is a great company to work for. Great pay and Bonus plan 401K matching is good also. I would work for this company again.

    Cons

Too many reorganizations every two years; you are constantly worried about losing your job to satisfy shareholder concerns for growth. Top management don't seem to care about keeping good talent. Everyone is treated with a broad brush when reorganizing, regardless of talent and performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continuous reorganizations every two years is very frustrating. It sends the message that they are not important to the company. Every time there is a reorg, key people are let go with no regard to talent or performance. Employment at WM is unstable.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Paid weekly, half decent benefits, safety bonuses, there is a good 401k plan. Profit sharing through an employee stock purchase plan.

    Cons

The trucks are falling apart. The drivers write things to be fixed and have a hard time getting them taken care of. Many driver comfort items are overlooked as not safety sensitive. Air conditioning is a big necessity when working in hot humid conditions. If a truck has A/C, it should work.
It seems like everything is a big secret. The communication between the managers and drivers is lacking. Management seems more concerned about the bottom line. The drivers are the face of the company and management needs to do whatever it takes to make sure the drivers are happy. If the drivers are happy, the customer is happy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying about the competitive advantage so much. A happy driver will make much more returns for the company rather than being pressured into going faster and faster all the while trying to be a safe as possible.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Paid weekly, good money in general. Base plus commission. Huge company that is well known and respected. Management is fair and doesn't play favorites which is refreshing.

    Cons

They have cut our commission pay once and then changed the terms of how we meet our goals once so now it's hard to max out on commission even though the job is the same. Also only 10 days of vacation first year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the wealth. This is a billion dollar company, stop taking money out of the employees pockets while the upper management gets huge bonuses.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There were some great supervisors and cared about their employees. Some fun activities to keep the work as fun as it could be. The company was ok, but seemed to be mostly about the money.

    Cons

Supervisors had their hands tied by call center management. Call center employees were treated as low level employees and were rarely considered for anything outside the call center. Many coworkers did not take the job seriously which makes it harder on the rest of the team. Overall it is a tough environment to enjoy!

Current Employee - Garbage Truck Driver in Ashland, WI

I have been working at Waste Management full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good health and retirement benefits. Good pay for hard work. There is a structured safety program with short weekly meetings to keep safety methods fresh in workers minds.

    Cons

Corporate pricing structures are unrealistic for current market conditions in rural markets. Customers are subject to higher fees which has led to us losing our market share of customers. Also long hours constantly, leading to stressful working conditions. Not much room for growth in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To make the safety culture a little easier, consider hiring more help to ease the burden on the current employees. Consider giving priority to current workers for positions within the company first.
