I worked at Waste Management full-time

    Pros

Lots of freedom with travel budget and entertainment.

    Cons

irratic area manager calls at all hours when drunk and doesn't remember the conversation the next day.

    Advice to Management

Blood alcohol tests should be given to management too. As a transportation company, you should be cautious of drunk drivers.

    Pros

Largest waste provider in United States with excellent landfill and disposal capacity. Strong pricing focus.

    Cons

Constant cost cutting, reductions in force, and centralization in a declining revenue business. Management expectations often unrealistic. Trying to maintain high margins when other competitors accepting less

    Advice to Management

Trying to maintain high margins when other competitors accepting less. Declining volumes indicative of high pricing, standard non exceptional service, and poor customer service.

    Pros

Industry leading company with strong leadership, excellent commitment to environmental and safety results and many employees with 15, 20 and more years of service. Competitive benefits.

    Cons

Expectation to be available 24/7. Frequent reorganizations. Decisions made with shareholders and C-Level bonuses in mind, often to the detriment of customers and employees.

    Advice to Management

Appropriate staffing levels will result in fewer issues and emergencies and will help reduce customer attrition. Take a long-term approach instead of making decisions that satisfy quarterly Wall Street expectations while costing the company more in the long run.

    Pros

The pay was very good for a first job out of college, and the city of Houston itself was a great place to be. Many of the people there were genuinely nice and some of them I wouldn't mind working with again. Also, the role I was in offered lots of flexibility in terms of how you wanted to develop and what you wanted to do at the company.

    Cons

It's a very traditional corporate structure and falls victim to the "robbing Peter to pay Paul" and "penny wise, pound foolish" mentalities too often. I was there largely as a designer and felt that my opinion was overrun because of both my young age and a general disregard for the voices of designers at the company. As a result, right before I left several of the senior designers had already resigned or were in the process of doing so. I was also made aware on a few occasions that my purpose was really to just make wireframes of what the project managers designed, not directly but more constantly being tasked to "mock it up like this." That's not the proper design process, to have them do it and ask me to mock it up - the designers should be solutioning the best approach and presenting it to the project managers/business team, not the other way around. I recognize this is all from the viewpoint of someone not in a traditional business role at a Fortune 200 company, but as a designer I found their approach unfavorable. However, if that's not the type of role you want hear, it's likely worth a shot. Also, I've heard that since I left they've started to redo how they go about managing projects so some of these issues may have cleared up since.

    Advice to Management

Let the designers design the best solution, don't try to force them to create your vision they exact way you see it. 9/10 times, they've found a good or possibly better solution and want to help the business achieve the goal it's set out to do.

    Pros

Working from home, set your own schedule depending on manager.

    Cons

High turnover in the sales force and in sales management. Pricing is very tough and makes it hard to sell anything depending on the market area. Upward mobility is there, but there are no positions I would want to move into.

    Pros

Great co workers that are willing to help; Supervisors are supportive & advocate for their subordinates to management; Systems rarely, if ever, go down.

    Cons

Arbitrary price gouging of customers; Changed job description and compensation for the worse in pursuit of the almighty $$; For such a large company, the benefits should be much better.

    Advice to Management

Stop chasing ridiculous profit margins, stop the arbitrary price gouging of one customer, but not the next; and focus on integrity, consistency, and work towards a culture where when someone 'wins' it does not mean another must 'lose'.
