    Pros

The university is a great place to work. They have great benefits (vacation time, insurance, tuition help). Good programs to help you in your career.

    Cons

Though they are in education, too many people with less school have been promoted over me even though they started after I did. It's not what you know, but who you know.

    Advice to Management

Be fair to all employees and allow them to grow before promoting friends who have less schooling and experience.

    Pros

Many opportunities are there. In some labs quality of research is high. But compared to other big universities Wayne state lacks the cutting edge research.

    Cons

You can only jump so hight here. No matter how hard you work there is a limitation on how far you could reach in terms of research publications due to low funding.

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement, great 401k plan and great location.

    Cons

Very weak diversity in upper management, limited true community engagement and terrible student support programming.

    Advice to Management

Hire strong men of color, implement a diversity department with influence and allow access to upper management with out it being a strict linear process.

    Pros

Nice people to work with. Really good and hardworking students.

    Cons

Less payments as compared to the workload Very poor IT/Technical support for teaching

    Advice to Management

Wayne State University should improve the High Power Computation (HPC) unit as there are many researchers who are working on simulations of various types which need more computational power. Also computer labs need parallel processing capability as most of the academic software are running on single core processor.

    Pros

Wonderful colleagues and supportive staff. Wayne is in a great location and is making huge strides in certain research areas and I am proud to be a part of that.

    Cons

Far too many administrative positions. Projects, requests, etc are all typically delayed due to going through so many channels. Too many office staff leads to high school type of drama and conflict. It can be very silly.

    Advice to Management

Streamline the administrative staff, its bloated, expensive and convoluted.

    Pros

The culture is very nice. Advisors are very supporting and helpful. The other graduate students are community oriented and friendly.

    Cons

Detroit regularly has power and other utility problems. Coordination between different branches is very poor, so it can be hard to get things fixed properly.

    Advice to Management

Better communication between different branches would greatly improve the working environment.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, tuition assistance, generous time off for assorted reasons (illness, vacation, holidays), holiday closure between Christmas and New Year's, campus life, access to training, access to education and information, a lot of nice people who have longevity.

    Cons

Yearly cutbacks in departments, frequent hiring freezes university-wide, bureaucracy and departments designed to handle bureaucracy, high parking fees for employees, disorganized review process, union bumping in many departments after layoffs, "we've always done it this way" attitude.

    Advice to Management

Jump out of "we've always done it this way" and learn to move in a more stream-lined fashion. Cut bulk out of departments and encourage fresh perspectives where it counts, not just in the academic sector but also in the staff sector. Be more transparent with business decisions (especially force reductions) and don't shrug off suggestions from younger or seasoned employees.
