    Working at Cornell

    Research Coordinator (Current Employee)

ProsFriendly staff, there are great perks to return to school (which they actually encourage), work flow is manageable (if you have a solid team)

ConsMicromanaging issues can be annoying. There are still people that are not that proficient at following easy instructions, which in turn slows down work flow.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure everyone is on the same page with completing tasks, especially when it comes time to meet certain deadlines. Last minute crunches are far too commonplace.

    Great place for starting research

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat people to work with, passionate about what they do. But it depends on your PI. As someone who isn't a Ph.D or grad student, it was a great starting experience into academia

ConsFunding is a problem for fundamental science, lack of upward career mobility

Job with a lot of opportunities for growth but it is physically demanding

    Animal Care Technician (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsAll that you need is a high school diploma or GED and can get a decent paying job with clear channels to advancement.

ConsThe politics of the job are more complicated than the work. You work with animals do there is the moral discussion. And it is a small department so small quarrels tend to be made bigger than necessary.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou know your employees. Keep their jobs simple and better manage the things that will make them comfortable and they will perform better.

    Great Learning experience

    Licensed Practical Nurse (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe company offers great benefits, including a generous tuition reembursement. Salaries are competitive, but yearly increases are standard.

ConsEach department is different. I find that Uptown offices offer more by way of cleaner enviroment, more professional employees etc. Downtown practices are not as supportive of its employees furthering education their education which is sad for a college institution.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeing flexible to allow for professional growth creates loyal and dedicated employees. Allowing work-life balances gives the employee job security while learning new skills, obtaining extra certifications and pursing degrees. This will benefit the company as employees will be more inclined to continue their career at your institution.

    Good intentions, hard to advance

    Attending Physician (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat reputation, patients respect it and you

ConsHard to get promoted. Pay is relatively low versus other institutions. Leadership is somewhat removed from the people that work there and respond only to the issues that they believe need fixing. Relationship with the hospital is complicated at best.

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvance people that speak their mind, not people that do what you say

    Sometimes exhausting but usually rewarding

    (Current Employee)
    Ithaca, NY

ProsLaid back environment. My boss is a great guy and very understanding. Most people are really nice and easy to get along with. Good health benefits.

ConsLow in diversity. I work in a science lab, and the overwhelming majority of my coworkers are older white men. The pay is decent enough, but raises are very low, and apartments in Ithaca are very expensive.

    Worst Decision I ever made

    Finance Administrator (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

Prosfair compensation, few Staff members are very kind and professional, thats about it- nothing more positive

ConsThere are different areas within the department as well as off site locations. I am currently in an off site location. The department is not a fine tuned machine, and although everything ties into each other, everyone feels that they are a separate entity.
A finance Administrator is running a billing area, when her job should solely be the budget of the department along with expenses.
They do not take their employees seriously, nor do they value you as an employee. The cliché "Happy Wife, Happy Life" also applies to the work situation. They do not acknowledge what good is being done, however, they have no problem jumping all over your faults. That I might add only become faults due to their lack of managing correctly.
I have never been at a job where:
    1. I had an HR rep try to warn me about taking this position because of the reputation this department had. Unbeknownst to me
    2. Your management does not get to know you as an employee or person/support or back you up in situations
    3. That I realized in such a short time period (2 weeks) that it was possibly one of the worst decisions that I could have made.
    4. The coworkers are just as miserable, and you can feel it upon entering into the department.
    5. I am actually not liking what I do anymore because of this place
There's so much more, but the is the jest of it.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more professional

Rewarding and collaborative research that truly allows you to develop as a researcher

    Research Technician (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsWhat I like most about my work at WCMC is the collaborative yet independent nature of the research. I was able to work with various researchers in the WCMC system on very fascinating projects and learned many different lab skills. Additionally, I greatly appreciated the flexibility and independence my supervisors allowed me with my work.

ConsThe HR is rather unresponsive and somewhat disorganized. Several individuals in my department waited weeks to see an adjustment in pay when awarded a raise. However, during the recruiting process, they are quite responsive.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile it is difficult to feel a strong managerial presence when most organization is handled by individual labs, I still think that one way that management could improve work experience would be to be improve the role of HR in managing workers' issues.
