I have been working at Wells Fargo full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Business growth focused, has strong financials, so good opportunities for people in the team.

Customer centricity in decisions- good stuff there, helps you feel peace of mind that you are doing the right thing.

Decent work life balance, average 50 hrs a week at managerial levels.

Decent pay, probably top tier among west coast banks.

Good/warm people, most of them working for Wells over a decade, tend to be less aggressive (vs. other banks).

    Cons

Heavily matrixed org and not-so-effective top/middle leadership, leading to ambiguity on ownerships/ accountability and too much in-fighting among teams.

Very slow moving on making decisions. Too much red tape and bureaucracy to deal with.

Mixed bag on talent/skill levels across all levels, so logic/sense gets victimized in decisions. Usually most politically correct position or loudest voice or highest paid person's opinion wins out.

Career progress appears limited and slow. Promotions virtually non existent. People sitting in the same role for long- easily 5+ years with no upward trajectory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate too many cooks problem, and simplify / streamline org structure and decision making.

Be more logic/fact based in decision making, encourage the culture top to bottom.

Ensure clear career path that results in upward trajectory within the same space/role- don't just ask people to do lateral move for development.

    Pros

The company does a great job of promoting and training. They also do a great job with ensuring that you don't become too consumed with work.

    Cons

The positions aren't too challenging and can be slightly repetitive. The company is also very sales oriented, so you are pushed to always promote products, regardless of fit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lay off the sales focus just a little.

    Pros

    Most teams work together well

    Cons

The email that went viral is absolutely true. We aren't compensated enough for what we do. The expectation are unrealistic and the payoff isn't worth it. It can become very cutthroat. Pointless meetings and then you are fought with over drivetime compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

You are given great tools for coaching your team to success. Training is the art of dealing with employees in various situations is very good.

    Cons

Work life balance is non existent. You are expected to work long hours on a regular basis without compensation of any kind. It is not unusual to be told to keep your team after hours calling customers to meet sales goals and then expected to have no overtime for hourly team members. Retaining good people is difficult without a steady work schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Vision and values are not supported by middle management. Middle management does not lead by example, often treating lower managers as a means to and ends rather than a person. A great deal of talk is centered around team member development. It's all talk with little support for moving up in the organization.
