Former Contractor - Senior Project Manager in Englewood, CO

I worked at Western Union as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Collaborative work environment. Great global diversity and different cultures. It was ever dynamic, ever-changing environment. Non stop to deliver projects on time and on budget.

    Cons

Western Union has decided to outsource IT staff to TaTa in India. Yes, the company is trying to save money but at what cost? Western Union is financial services company. The customer financial data should stay in the USA. Also, the IT jobs should stay in USA. It is more efficient working with Agile team locally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Boosting customer satisfaction with a balanced, personalized approach. Social media engagement could improve company performance. Social media strategies should extend beyond promotional discounts. Responsive customer service representatives were also an important aspect of customer satisfaction. Many firms are trying to use social media to expand the reach of their brands, but this should not be done at the expense of customer service. Walmart is becoming competitor. Let us not forget that Western Union is USA company and should be very vigilant on innovation in this very competitive market. We do not want Western Union to eventually disappear as a brand. Western Union can be awesome company!

    Pros

Nice group of people and the work hours are reasonable. Working hard to keep the brand relevant in the 21st century.

    Cons

The company has historically under-invested in systems and over complicated the processes to get things done quickly. This is keeping the company from moving fast and being relevant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest internally instead of buying back shares just once and you will be on your way to being great again.

Sometimes departments don't quite work together but overall everyone is a team player.

I have been working at Western Union full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are insane - great PTO, good Bonus plan (if financial targets are met), tuition reimbursement, etc. Good team members, great location, relaxed-but-still-professional atmosphere. Amazingly good work/life balance.

    Cons

As with any for-profit corporation, quarterly earnings and re-orgs put most teams on edge and in fear of layoffs. We have just turned the corner from a major transformation/re-org effort, and it seems to be paying off, but it doesn't eliminate the fear of layoffs if we have a bad quarter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop wasting money on "internal marketing" to make us feel good about our products. Focus on talent development instead. Seeing a hard-working colleague laid off only to then see hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on fancy new conference rooms and a "hip" cafeteria is distressing.

Managers and Directors are fearful of pushing back against VPs when it comes to workloads. We've had major cuts in resources and staff, and have outsourced a number of functions to contractors who quite frankly have not been performing well and we end up having to pick up their slack despite losing people. But it seems as though the "do more with less" mantra and fear of being laid off for not "performing" prevents people from setting and meeting realistic goals. Fast, Good, & Cheap - you can't do all three - pick two or let your managers re-prioritize.

I have been working at Western Union

    Pros

Good benefits and compensation, treated fairly by management, has money to spend on technology.

    Cons

Like any big organization, fellow talent can be a crap shoot. There are some talented folks and also some untalented folks, including in positions of authority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose a direction and stick to it. This company is like a child with ADHD. Each 3 year initiative gets about 1.5 years in and then is dropped while it is only halfway done.

I have been working at Western Union full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good compensation/benefits, generally nice and motivated co-workers, company is undergoing transformation and trying to get into new markets (digital, compliance, WUBS).

    Cons

Transformation process leads to confusion and miscommunications, some processes/tasks take a lot more time and energy than necessary, resistant to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep investing in digital and compliance. Clarify and integrate WUBS further into the business. Encourage transperancy and open communication. Have departments interact with each other more.
