    Pros

The company knows nuclear. It is multi serviced in several areas of new plants, service to old plants, and still has the resources for a true Nuclear Renaissance. There is deep and highly knowledgable dedicated expertise to the nuclear industry.

    Cons

The industry has been dealt some heavy blows. First, Fukushima slowed down business growth and raised global caution; Second, low natural gas prices have provided for low carbon alternatives for electricity generation; Third, the CEO of Toshiba recently resigned amidst an accounting scandal (WSJ words) with expectations of unrealistic profit margins, placing undue pressure on management to meet unrealistic expectations. This has clearly carried through to top management in the nuclear business unit where rewards and recognition are in short supply and unrealistic work hours/expectations are causing turnover.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to help foster employee engagement by allowing employees to explore career paths within the company. During my time there, it was discouraged and in some cases, punished. Accomplishments (in my case) were not recognized by some managers. I believe outside help is needed to reinvigorate a more positive culture that is more motivational to employees. This will be challenging, especially upon citing the 'Cons' above. Management needs management training - a good engineer doesn't necessarily make a good manager! My best managers had management (project or HR) training and certification.

    Pros

Great company to work for in terms of stability and incentives. Pay is acceptable and the work environment is laid back. Lots of freedom to work and the environment encourages learning to facilitate the project's needs. I was permitted to teach myself numerous programming languages on company time in order to adequately perform on given projects.

    Cons

Middle management needs to be willing to go to bat for their employees during evaluations. Despite high review remarks, many employees receive nominal raises and are passed over on promotions. The company needs to provide more incentives to their employees to strive for excellence in their work. As it currently sits, there is no difference between doing the minimum and keeping your head down and going above and beyond your role. Both employees get equal raises.

    Advice to Management

Stand up for your outstanding employees during your calibration meetings.

    Pros

Work for this company if you are in management route and good at politics. As an engineer at the bottom of the company, I like the new CEO. He knew the main problems immediately after he took the job. However, I know those managers from the low to upper levels don't like him.

    Cons

Management structure is very poor and has many layers. Managers even don't have a good system to manage employee's work loads. For my group, we are using a sheared spreadsheet for individuals to enter their projected work. The immediate resource managers rely on this spreadsheet to know what their employees are working and project work load for his/her group and send to upper managers. Employees got their work assignment through leads who are assigned by the resource managers. Leads also rely on the spreadsheets to manage/plan assignments for his fellow workers. We are told to work overtime regularly without get paid . There is an 8-hour rule, i.e., if you work over 10 hours, you can get paid for 2 hours with manager's approval.

    Advice to Management

Value technical people who are the core value of this company and provide them a good environment to work.

    Mass exodus of retiring people

I have been working at Westinghouse full-time

    Pros

With all the older people retiring, they are lots of opportunities to become the go to expert at a young age.

    Cons

Westinghouse seems to not be trying to replace the retiring members with new engineers. If you cannot justify a two or more year backlog of work, you are not going to be able to hire anyone.
