I worked at Westinghouse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Feels like everyone is trying to do the right thing. Lots of structure to how things are done and good communication. Employee focused--almost too much.

    Cons

Slow to respond to change and they sometimes cripple themselves with unnecessary rules.

I have been working at Westinghouse

    Pros

Westinghouse is a leading reactor vendor worldwide. The brand recognition is great to have on a resume, but more importantly, there are many very experienced professionals at the company that are ready and willing to share their knowledge with younger staff. There is a wealth of knowledge and a broad variety of work that needs to be completed, so each day is different from the last. There are many opportunities for travel, site assignments, conference attendance, and graduate school. The 9/80 schedule is a great benefit.

    Cons

Poor project management often leads to rework, time pressure, and added stress, which can be very frustrating. Also, there are many employees who are not pulling their weight, and the more enthusiastic workers are expected to pick up the slack. Pay is not competitive with other companies across the industry for the amount of effort expected of each employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More flexibility like making telecommuting more accessible to high performing employees would be a plus.

Knee jerk reactions to discipline and silo mentality over metrics have swung a once great company in the wrong direction

I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent compensation within the fields of engineering. There is lots of room to advance (which is also a Con as there are excessive layers of management). While the company focuses on nuclear power, there are many specialized groups to which employees can move.

    Cons

Workforce is separated into the old and the young where many employees are stuck in their ways of doing things the way they've always done things.
The freedom with which employees were once trusted only 5 years ago is almost totally gone due to a lack of appropriate management and oversight in the few instances where employees abused the benefits of 9/80, flex time, working from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to the One Westinghouse mentality and stop fighting amongst one another to incrementally improve a few of your own metrics at the expense of another's project just because they report to a different manager.

Great company, previous executives were more focused on people and less on business. Now the opposite is true.

I have been working at Westinghouse

    Pros

Stability, hard work is rewarded, work is important and impactful to society

    Cons

Lots of procedures, many employees are very book smart and it can be a challenge to navigate procedures to get real practical work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate the time suckers that are more interested in research projects and less on getting work done. Look to engineering schools other than Penn State - it seems that 3 out of 4 engineers at Westinghouse are from PSU and the company could benefit from a more diverse background of engineering thinking. Many great engineers from PSU but we need a better cross-section of talent.

I have been working at Westinghouse as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

This was a great place to intern. I gained a lot of experience that has helped me in my job search as well as got a great feel for the corporate world. The pay is really great for an Intern and the Intern program is truly awesome. There are many different activities and Intern events throughout the summer.

    Cons

It seems like many people are not satisfied with their jobs and the office can be tense at times.

I worked at Westinghouse as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Ethical company that focuses on helping the world to build safer alternative energy sources.

    Cons

Not as fast paced as big tech companies. Due to the nature of the work, it's bureaucratic.

Great place to intern, but it is an office setting strictly

I worked at Westinghouse as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is good, the people are good, it feels like they care, had a lot of great times there, learned a lot about big businesses and nuclear industry

    Cons

There is a hierarchy in the office, as in a lot of places. There was a lot of down-time in my internship. Some people who work there are very unhappy about what they're being asked to do. There is a general negativity about some things, like working with other companies and things. Regular big business problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wish there wasn't such a disconnect between the higher-ups and the lower people. It feels like the managers are on ice a lot about many things and the lower people are just there to do their job and leave. No one seems to love working there at all.
