I worked at Wet Seal part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule and fun co-workers. A good job for a high schooler or full time college student.

    Cons

Minimum wage for short hours and no bonuses. Managers don't care what it takes to get reach goals, even if it includes keeping you after your shift. The worst was the on-call shifts. You have to call in 2 hours before when your shift starts to find out if they need you, so you cannot make plans.

I worked at Wet Seal full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

40% discount. inexpensive swim wear and sandals. Visual merchandising freedom ( if you know what you're doing) if you're lucky meet some great people

    Cons

Rarely get face time with DM and Corp. Visitors from Corp would stay at the hotel across the street and not stop in our store. This leaves little room to voice your concerns and needs. Management is Very clique-y. If you're not in there "in Crowd" good luck with any promotion or raise. They'll Set you up for failure, quickly, if you don't pay attention. Definitely racism in some districts. Pay is laughable they currently have an ASM getting paid $8.50.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hard work deserves good pay and acknowledgement. Don't let the District managers plan your visits. They steer you away from stores that have already voiced concerns and had nothing done and have been ignored.

I worked at Wet Seal as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Casual dress, one Friday a month off and some pretty cool co workers. Pay was decent too. They had sample sales which were a great perk for permanent employees. Super cheap clothes and jewelry and they let you shop during working hours which was cool!

    Cons

They will let executives above treat people poorly and never say a word. Depending on your department the people are spread so thin they are really stressed - I felt like I was walking on egg shells most of the time. If you weren't a permanent employee you couldn't go to the sample sales with the perm employees you had to sit at your desk and work while watching everyone coming back with bags filled with loot for like 20.00 and you could go with the public and line up at 3:00AM on a Saturday morning! It was a major downer. Made contractors feel like they weren't working as hard as the full time employees! We wanted to be full time with benefits (who wouldn't). They string the temps along telling them to hang in there and it's going to go perm. I knew people who were there as temps for 2 years plus!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach your executive team how to treat the "little people" with some respect and kindness! People work harder for you when you treat them nicely! Also, be upfront - if there is no budget for the job to go permanent let the temp know so they know what they are signing up for.

    Pros

Discounts, Bonding with team members, experience

    Cons

The company overall SEEMS to be a great company to work for if you are on the outside looking in. Once you are actually in it, It is a different story. Maybe it is not like that with every Wet Seal store, but the particular one that I worked in, overall, it sucked! Once I became a manager, my eyes were open. There was so much undercover drama going on that I did not want to be a part of. As a leader, your role is to guide, to help, to encourage your team, not shoot them down and then act like nothing ever happened. I am a straight forward person, not mean in any way, just very straight forward so I was not with the BS. I felt like I was one of the only managers that actually genuinely cared about my employees. I watched several people get stabbed in the back by one manager in particular only to get herself ahead and you know what, it only left her behind in the end. Don't get me started on the district director, she showed favoritism to her favorite managers and favorite stores and left us hanging with no guidance plenty of times. I got screwed over left and right. She sucks at communicating, yet wants us to communicate with her and follow up with her. No, it does not work that way, hunny. I won't even go in depth on how she screwed me over, more than once. Once I left that store, I felt like a burden was lifted. I am not for the shady crap! In the end, that store will be left with nobody because they have ran everyone away. Sad. All I keep saying is "what goes around comes around". Wet Seal has dumbest policies, and expect you to work SO hard for so little. I'll pass.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people that ACTUALLY care about others...selfless people.

I have been working at Wet Seal part-time

    Pros

Friendly managers and co-workers, positive energy. They don't rip you apart when you make a mistake.

    Cons

You have no personal life. I have been working here for only a short time and despite the fact that I have call-ins a lot, they never need me. I wait by the phone to call only to be told no. By that point, the day is pretty much gone and wasted, because I can't make plans. And when I do work, it's only 1 or 2 days a week. Do your employees a favor. TRAIN THEM! Have them come in for a solid two weeks, 10-6, and teach them EVERYTHING! Tell them who's a manager and who isn't so they know who they absolutely MUST listen to. It is my opinion that if you want someone to learn and thrive, to truly know the business, give them the hours. They will NEVER learn if you don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN your employees. Know that if a person is told one thing, you can't come in and tell them something different. We can only obey one set of rules at a time.

    Pros

    Great Discounts
    Costumers
    Other Employees
    Cute Clothes
    Good Promotions

    Cons

    Unorganized
    Bad Management
    Too Many On Calls
    New Store Policy
    FIC'S
    Not A lot of Hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop depending so much on FIC'S from less tourist attraction malls like Coral Springs and Westfield Mall because only local people go to these malls instead of somewhere like Sawgrass,Dolphin or Aventura Mall where it would be easier to sell these cards because a lot of local and tourist people go there to shop and easier to scam because the card is a total scam. Get rid of this new on call policy because I think its dumb that us employees have to call the mangers to see if they want us to come in because now I have to clear my whole schedule and wait to see if they need me or not which I think is totally unfair. You guys need to find a better way of doing the schedules. Its easier if you just schedule each employee a opening/mid and closing shift and if its slow and you don't need them just send them home because its an in convince to us employees. Its also unfair that if someone calls out and I'm call and I cant come in I'm held accountable for this.
