Tons of $$$$, not much else

Finance Director (Former Employee)

I worked at Whirlpool

ProsYou are paid very well.

As a Director, my total compensation was about $225,000. 2/3 of this was in base, the balance in bonus and other comp.

Cons- Poor work-life balance
- Terrible management
- Rampant cronyism
- Lots and lots and lots of meetings.. you'd better love meetings with no discernable action items
- VERY poor opportunities for skills development.. you'll be doing things that you did 5 years earlier in your career, albeit for much more money

Advice to Senior ManagementKill the meetings, the inbred "we're the best" mentality, the silos and the complete lack of internal controls around executive success metrics. Focus on bottom-line profitability, take accountability when things go wrong (they always will) and DELEGATE instead of withholding key assignments and critical information.

competition has passed them by

Marketing Director (Former Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I worked at Whirlpool

Prosnice folks to work with - friendly, trustworthy - nice town to work in for families - everyone knows each other - it's really a close-knit community

Consno/low tolerance for outsiders - the company has really become inbred over time - real aversion/fear of new thinking and ideas - the market and competition have passed them by and they don't even know it

the company is completely inwardly focused - there is no real connection to the marketplace

Advice to Senior Managementthe game has completely changed - you have to recognized that what has worked in the past is not going to work now - you must be open to new people and new ideas - you have to be willing to hear bad news and believe it

also, "work harder" is not a strategy - the company needs a clear new direction instead of grinding away at the same old tired ideas

Whirlpool Marion. A Typical American Company.

Manufacturing Specialist (Current Employee)
Marion, OH

I have been working at Whirlpool

ProsIt is one of the better paying jobs in the area. We have a 401k match program that is nice not great but nice. Whirlpool has a lot of help programs for employees financial workshops, smoking cessation program, Stress management help, a nurse help line and a company doctor on site. We have a plant emergency team on all three shifts. helth and safety are very important here. We have a new DVP who seems to have a good head on his shoulders. We are working hard on lean events to make us more cost effective. There are a lot of great people here to work with.

ConsThey cut the education reimbursement program. Health benefits have been cut in the last ten years to minimum or almost minimum coverage. Management has not taken the advice from engineers to the line worker on worn out machines and dies. We are now forced to deal with all the problems that come from years of neglect. Some of our skilled trades areas are not given tools or machines to preform there daily tasks efficiently or in a timely mannor. Some of the skilled trades areas are under staffed to complete the work necessary to keep the shop running. There are a lot of little problems that could be fixed to help the prosses run more efficiently.

Advice to Senior ManagementMaybe we should do a lean event in the Senior Management area to see if we can cut cost here. It seems very lopsided when we have to cut out jobs on the line 35k - 40k each and have someone working for more than 10 times that giving all of our products non-value added expence. NAR is much like Ford and GM very top heavy. We should do lean acrossed the board.

small cog in a big machine

Sales & Marketing (Former Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I worked at Whirlpool

Prosbusiness acument, good training programs, insight into corporate america, springboard for next career, colleagues. Good learning grounds for future jobs.

ConsPoor management communication, lack of concern for the little guys, lack of vision, lack of openness to new ideas, new concepts, innovation. Poor communication among all the different divisions throughout the world: There are certainly interesting career opportunities in different countries, but good employees leave because these positions are either not known nor well communicated. Among They don't provide enough incentive to keep good people in such an uninteresting, small little community like Benton Harbor, Saint Joseph. There is too little investment in the people.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more attentive to customers, listen to employees, take more stock in employee skills before their gone.

Great work experience and opportunities, but very closed culture.

Marketing (Current Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I have been working at Whirlpool

ProsIf you are going to work in the appliance industry, you should work for the leader. Great work experience and resume builder. You get excellent opportunities to work on important projects very early in your career. For the right person, you can get exposure to senior leaders very early. You learn a lot about a very complex business and get exposure to a wide variety of functional areas. You work with some very smart people.

ConsTough industry that is an experiencing a multi-year decline. Old boy culture. Extremely matrixed culture makes decision making very complex and difficult to hold to a strategy/decision. Although people a very smart and driven, they often use these talents to get ahead in a very political environment. The HR strategy is very divisive and does not help focus people on the common good.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on transparency and fairness. Promotions seem like a popularity contest rather than delivering results.

Not good for fresh college grads.

Senior Analyst (Current Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I have been working at Whirlpool

ProsThere's some opportunity for international travel so you get those bragging rights.

Consbaby boomers everywhere! it doesn't help being the fresh college grad among them; not only do they give you a hard time but they don't have any training programs to get people on board.

My biggest pet peeve was that no one seemed to have a decent college degree there except for the executives. Most of the people got their Bachelor's degrees only when the company began funding it. Even managers and directors have come from the most remote / unheard-of colleges. And it still feels like a company that's being run by 5th graders.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that you and your people get proper training. It seems like the only thing management can do is to count on consultants to make all the real decisions. The only thing I've seen senior management do is to make the payments and sign whatever comes in from the consultants. Incompetent management is ruling whirlpool and the company going to be eaten alive!

IT at Whirlpool heading south fast

GIS Lead Analyst (Current Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I have been working at Whirlpool

ProsGlobal Company with the ability to get good international experience

ConsThe new managment doesn't care about it's people. If you want somthing done, get someone from the outside to suggest it and you will get what you want

Advice to Senior ManagementThe current IT managment has ran the place into the ground. You need to step back and listen to the people that know the place best. Bringing in folks from the outside is not always the right answer. You preach about listending to your people and developing your people but go outside the first chance you get.

Whirlpool could learn from the top 25 employer list

Senior Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Benton Harbor, MI

I have been working at Whirlpool

ProsFreedom to manage your own time as needed. This allows most people the ability to work from home or remotely as needed. The benefits package for people entering the company are very lucrative. Outside of Management the people you work with on a daily basis are very skilled and helpful as well as great people.

ConsMiddle and upper management has little knowledge of the skills below them, or the work it takes to get any of the work done within the organization. Very disconnected and offer little or no leadership qualities. Human resources is not working to help people, they only process what mgmt has them. Politics are horrible within people who are disconnected from what needs to happen.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue and appreciate employees. Help build morale and guide career paths. Trust your people to have the ability to get the job done without looking over your peoples shoulders.

Very constructive in the beginning and declining over time. People's value is based on behaviour not on capabilities

Operations Director (Current Employee)
Trento (Italy)

I have been working at Whirlpool full-time for more than 10 years

Pros#1 in our industry worldwide with lot of resources available.
Very challenging environment that force you to develop and to grow day in day out

ConsToo many temporary and/or generalist managers but poor specific knowledge and skills at high level.
In Europe shrinking and leaving less and less opportunities

Advice to Senior ManagementYour manager level feels that there is no more space for long lasting carriers in Whirlpool

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
