    ProsFlexible schedule and good pay.

ConsTheir PMP review system is a joke. With this system, management has to give an employee a "needs improvement" or "exceeds improvement' rating every year regardless of their performance.
Promotion is based on who you know and not what you know or how you perform.
The appliance industry is very competitive now and the only reason Whirlpool has been profitable the last few years is cut backs to cost and not volume.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the PMP system. If you can't rely on your managers to give an accurate assessment of each employee, they shouldn't be in management.

    Assembly (Current Employee) Marion, OH

ProsGood work environment. Get to try new things often. Most of the people are fun to be around. Management takes their job seriously but knows how to lighten up.

ConsConstant lay offs to temps. Cant afford anything with $10/ hour and no benefits as a temp. Takes two years for direct hire.

ProsGreat starter company to work for. Care about growth potential for new, young hires.

ConsMore development opportunities are needed for experienced employees. WHR encourages and supports continuous growth and development for young employees, but when you've been with the company several years you typically don't see that same level of commitment and you get lost in the shuffle All roads lead to Benton Harbor....not great for single people.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on growth and development for strong candidates. Figure out new ways to to retain lower/middle level mgmt.

Great place to get experience, not a great place for a full career

Senior Finance Manager (Current Employee) Benton Harbor, MI

ProsYou will work with intelligent people who have a passion for their work and are fun to be around. You will be challenged with interesting projects and will be given a lot of responsibility. Everyone around you is driven to win. If you are early in your career and want some excellent experience and want to build your resume for the next move, this is a great place to be.

ConsThe talent pool evaluation process is rank driven, which drives bad behavior sometimes (throwing others under the bus in order to appear to be a stronger player in the talent pool). There is also an 'up or out' mentality which makes a long term career almost impossible. The organization is flattening, so upward mobility is shrinking, which is driving talented people to leave the company in order to find promotional opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe current path is going to drive a talent pool of people with very shallow experience in leadership positions, which means you will continue to make the same mistakes over and over. There is a place for talented, experienced director and senior director level leaders who are not on a path to be the next members of the senior executive management team, and you should focus more on developing that pipeline.

    Rewarding to a point

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Benton Harbor, MI

    ProsBroad product portfolio
    Global teams
Ability to design truly useful consumer products
    Laid-back culture, friendly people

ConsLack of diversity (of thought, of appearance)
Conservative -- afraid to take real chances
Silo-effect hinders effective collaboration (across product categories, across regions)
Top-heavy -- too many layers of management

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more chances in the type of people you hire and in the projects you fund and commercialize

Great place to deal with appliance engineering.

    Technician (Former Employee) Evansville, IN

ProsGood group of people to work for in the appliance industry.
    Able to learn new technologies.
    Teamwork would work under stress

ConsPoor method of evaluating work performance.
Budget concerns always hampered learning the newest skills.
Promotions were few and far between

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the poor performance management process!!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
