I worked at Whirlpool full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fun products with a great sense of urgency to get them to market. Headquartered in a excellent small community right next to some of the best beaches in the country.

    Cons

Long hours are expected for a promotion. Pay is average at best. Lots of last minute requests from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shorten the time to advance people amd prioritize life balance.

I have been working at Whirlpool full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get the chance to work on great, meaningful projects with a team of pretty great people. St. Joseph/Benton Harbor is a wonderful place to raise a family and the weather is great (in the summer!)

    Cons

Wish that upper management was more open to flexible work arrangements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement some really robust HR policies that support employees who want to work in a more flexible way. Right now it has to be done "under the table" and there seems to be no support for the top.

    Pros

Global program management opportunities, tremendous individual skills growth opportunities.

    Cons

"Mom and Pop" feel, Vs Corporate Industry Leader. Both advantageous, and disadvantageous, depending on your level and role within the firm.

I have been working at Whirlpool full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The culture is relaxed with a great work/life balance. The pay is competitive and the bonus for the last two years has been great.

    Cons

HR continues to hold top performers back ensuring their pay does not exceed their salary bands. This creates little incentive to perform well from a salary perspective, when your merit increase is larger than your promotion salary increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the people you've hired do their job. There is no reason a director should be signing $1M contracts when you're a $20B company! Look outside of corporate headquarters for talent and continue to push for solutions to allow global connectivity.

I worked at Whirlpool full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great career advancement opportunities but paid a price for it. Fortunate to have some bright and cutting edge bosses who helped me advance quite far in a short period of time. I learned a tremendous amount during my 8 years there and had some memorable experiences.

    Cons

Nasty office politics with fighting among departments. Me first attitude among senior execs rather than team first. Borderline unethical quarter-end pushes that never end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to make mistakes without compromising their career. I saw way too many good people lose their career for taking a risk. Fix the fighting among departments as it kills the underlying team's morale. Stop the quarter-end pushes. It is a great company if you are fortunate enough to hitch your wagon to a star but life is miserable if you are unlucky and have boss who is not a star.

I have been working at Whirlpool

    Pros

Good exposure to the leadership. Business oriented experience. Travel to international locations.

    Cons

Smaller area of location. Not good if you are a young person who likes to hang out with friends. Relationship based company and too old school in many ways.

  8.

I have been working at Whirlpool full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Whirlpool has an excellent set of values. Salaries and benefits are overall competitive. Whirlpool as a whole is a solid company with longevity in the market place.

    Cons

Whirlpool's values are not followed by every department, causing a negative impact to morale and productivity. Some departments/positions are given less value than others and are provided poor and/or inefficient tools to perform duties. This causes a severe "slow down" in completing tasks within required time parameters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest that upper management take a closer look at how the "lower" levels of positions are being valued and the tools that they are provided to the employees. There is a lot of waste caused by not providing the right tools to employees to perform their duties. Many excellent employees are being overwhelmed because the tools they have do not support the job requirements they are accountable for. Ultimately, our customers suffer because of lengthy delays to resolved issues.

I have been working at Whirlpool full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent opportunity to learn a wide range of business and technical skills. Good place to start a career.

    Cons

Talent evaluation process is very over engineered. I have seen way too many great people passed over simply because we have to fulfill a ridiculous HR distribution. It's like "Corporate Hunger Games"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're a midwestern manufacturer - stop pretending that you're in Silicon valley. Instead of trying to force fit talent inside the constraints of a text book curve, try having some faith in your managers and their ability to keep/grow talent and weed out under performers.
