Worked for Williams for many, many years in Operations positions and it is an ok place to work.

I worked at Williams Companies full-time for more than 10 years

ProsA lot of job freedom without direct supervision on a daily basis. Good benefits and pay but lousy perks for Manager and above positions. Great job security. Interesting work for the most part. Huge geographical area of Operations you can work just about anywhere in the USA if they have openings.

ConsManagers, Directors and Vice Presidents are mostly lackluster for a company of this size. Lousy performance review system and pay metrics associated with it. Williams isn't understaffed but have a lot of dead weight around. It is almost impossible to get fired there and everyone knows that and use it to their advantage often.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the dead weight and hire people that would appreciate working for a company like this.

I worked at Williams Companies full-time for less than a year

ProsThere were some really good people working there, the company encourages community involvement, the industry itself is very interesting.

ConsVery political atmosphere, sometimes hostile unjustifiably. Managers did seem to be on ego trips and not necessarily interested in mentoring their employees, nor in running a quality department. There are very few people there you can trust.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on developing your people and the quality of the output of your department. Stick up for your staff if they are right.

Mixed feelings about the experience.

I have been working at Williams Companies

ProsWilliams has wonderful benefits, contributes to the betterment of the community, has many talented and intelligent people working for them. A permanent position with the company is definitely worthwhile, esp if you can get into a department with good management.

ConsWilliams will lead contractors to believe a permanent job is on the horizon for them (one for certain was kept on a leash for 4 years), and then never deliver. I know of many who were treated as I was. They use the older contractors to train the younger college recruits, and then let the older contractors go, even ones who have been loyal contributors to Williams for over a year. Some of these "older" contractors were under 35! I was a contractor trying to get a permanent position with the company. A great deal of money was invested in training me which turned out to be a complete waste as a VP would not approve the position to be permanent. I noticed a great deal of resources spent in other areas as well that were seemingly wasted regularly due to politics and power struggles.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate the older worker who brings experience and maturity to the company. I understand the desire to try to keep the young professionals in Tulsa, but to mistreat and use the older professional shows a lack of class and will cause them to leave Tulsa instead, and take their skills with them. Eventually, the younger professionals will also leave for greener pastures in other states, after they've made their mistakes at Williams. If you want to hire a college recruit, do not kick a contractor out of the position they've been working in for months and sometimes years to do that. It is better business practice to do right by people. The long term rewards are much better for the health of the company.

ProsIn Tulsa it is a decent place to work.

ConsDecisions by consensus lead to a very slow decision making process.

A great place to work in Tulsa

ProsTulsa based company has made it past hard times and seems to be on its way back. Big United Way supporter.

ConsCompany had to overcome some poor strategic moves competing with other firms like Enron and Worldcom. To some extent, the company lost its values in the late 90's.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider the real value and cost of outsourcing to sustainable industry leadership. Make a commitment to lead by example always.

Williams -- rebuilding

Director (Former Employee)
Tulsa, OK

I worked at Williams Companies

ProsWas once a very stable company. Very staid, with a lot of job security. Easy environment to work in, although the decision by consensus was a little much, if you wanted to drive change forward. Good benefits, low stress until the bottom fell out.

ConsWhen the bottom started falling out, Sr. mgmt was very slow to react, forcing it to ultimately sell off a large part of the company. Not much upward mobility. Good old boy network in place. Somewhat slow to make decisions -- very typical of an oil and gas company. Too many Sr. mgmr perks (jets etc)

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue on the path to restoring the stock value. Continue to grow the company

Good place to work but not to advance.

ProsBenefits are great dollar for dollar match for up to 6% of salary. Medical, Dental and Vision insurance offered. Vacation time is generous.

ConsNo career path available.
Promotion seems to be based on social networking instead of merit.
Salary is on the lower side of the median.

Advice to Senior ManagementCareer Paths should be developed. Promotions should be based on skill level and merit with time vested acting as a tie breaker in situations where two employees are equally as qualified but one has more time vested. Salaries should be kept closer to the median.
