Not what it used to be

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat discount. Beautiful stores. Great catalogs

ConsToo metric oriented now. No team concept. Store employees fight over the sales. Too many expectations for the sales associates but no time given to complete the tasks. Bottom line is customers need to be served in the store, if you're busy doing that you can't clientel etc. Customers tired of being told about the VISA card.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to basics and what we were founded on. If you want us to be accountable for $200/sales per hour, incent us or pay us commission.

Corporate people are out of touch with reality of stores functionality

Seasonal Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Thousand Oaks, CA

I worked at Williams-Sonoma part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGetting to know the product line, the discount, the people

ConsQuality of products going downhill, unrealistic sales goals, too much time spent on trivial things

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter training for seasonal employees who really want to help, fire your current product buyer because this years product quality was AWFUL, get more feedback from retail employees who are in the ground and knowledgable about store issues

Williams-Sonoma rely on temp seasonal employees who get no benefits other than merch discount. Low morale, high turnover.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Oklahoma City, OK

I worked at Williams-Sonoma full-time for more than a year

Pros40% discount on company merchandise, casual dress code, voluntary (unpaid) time off to take care of personal needs such as doctor appointments, time off with your family.

ConsManagement is weak. Leadership and help is hard to get, especially during peak season. They need more managers during that time period than they allocate. Way too much turnover, very few long term employees. They rely way too much on temporary employees so they don't have to pay full time benefits which makes temp employees feel dissatisfied and looking for other job opps.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention to your employees, give them encouragement to do better, or tell them they're doing a good job.

Sales Manager

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Williams-Sonoma

ProsLiked the product line. Enjoyed my team. Enjoyed connecting with customers and building relationships. Liked the design aspect of the job.

ConsHarsh environment created by upper leadership. So numbers focused that employees and customers get forgotten. Not enough payroll to meet expectations.

Advice to Senior ManagementRaise payroll or lower expectations. You already have high turnover in the field and it is going to increase as the job market gets better.

Fun, but just a job.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Fort Lauderdale, FL

I worked at Williams-Sonoma part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat people to work with.

ConsHardly any hope for full time. Even at part time they can only put you on for 9(total) hours in a week.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe upfront about how many hours you will be able to work.

OK company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma full-time for more than a year

Pros- Good core product philosophy
- Beautiful stores and quality goods
- 40% employee discount
- Location with parking

Cons- Depending on what department you're in or who you work with, it can be very political
- Too much gossip
- Cliquey
- Management plays favorites
- Unless you brown-noser your manager, you will most likely stay in your current position for years.
- Pitiful blanket bonus and raise

Advice to Senior Management- Care about employees as individuals, not only who you directly work with but if you manage a team, don't make it obvious that you only like some certain people.
- That means spend time one on one with team members and provide training.

Williams Sonoma has become too corporate, it is loosing is personality

Sales Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma part-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe management at the store level, and the dedicated sales associates make Williams Sonoma an enjoyable stimulating place to work.

ConsSometimes it seems as though "Opening new credit cards , capturing E-mails, and many of the other things we are being asked to do have become more important than our original business model of providing the best customer service available in this tough retail market.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes our hours are cut so drastically that we do not have enough help to cover the store, let alone provide the customer service our customers deserve. This is especially true during the Holiday Season.

Not what it once was....

General Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma full-time for more than 8 years

ProsDiscount, forward thinking, exceptional customer service

ConsSalary, always asking for more with less, payroll unacceptable for dily, weekly and monthly expectations.

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up...over time there has been a back slide in everything that you do and it's beginning to catch up with the company and brand. Back to basics...forget about metrics as you are killing what made this company so special. Greed and unrealistic demands will be your downfall! Public company or not...how many companies that are so required a few open air market stores to be open for Easter? Think about it? It truly doesn't look great to our following or customer base!
