    Disorganized, profit oriented.

    Associate (Current Employee)
    Las Vegas, NV

ProsAssociates get good discount, even on most sale items. Most associates and some of the managers were nice to work with.

ConsInconsistent schedule. Poor distribution of hours to associates - favorites get more hours. Lower pay in comparison to other retailers.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat associates decently and fairly. Invest time training associates instead of constantly having to hire to replace those who left out of frustration.

    Great products, difficult to advance

    Retail Associate (Former Employee)
    The Woodlands, TX

ProsThe company offers casual associates the ability to determine what days they want to work. Great employee discount and great products. People want to shop at WS so customers are generally great to deal with.

ConsReally difficult to move up. Movement seems to be highly based on who you know not what you know. Policies are generally inconsistently enforced. Hours can be extremely unpredictable and go from excessive to nothing between December and March.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the big picture when it comes to resources given to the store to conduct business.

There is a lot to learn and the training doesn't cover a great deal of it.

Seasonal Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)
    Las Vegas, NV

ProsYou get a 40% discount on very popular products. Your co-workers will be more helpful than the supervisors & leads. Don't be afraid to ask absolutely anyone who's attention you can get.

ConsI can't speak for all of the supervisors, of course. The "Seasonal" supervisor I got, for my "Seasonal" employment was the worst I've ever had. He openly criticized his wards, after he neglected to answer their questions, or give them good advise. There were a couple of other supervisors who helped me, but it just made my supervisor angry when I turned to them.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to supervise your supervisors. Some are just not doing their jobs.

Lots of work with little empowerment.

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)

ProsBest reasons to work here: discount, get to cook, create and eat and get to chat with very passionate customers.

ConsThe cons are the workload placed on the team can be overwhelming. The company is very reactionary to business and can expect you to change directions in a very small window of time. Classic case of little hours to run the business and lots of tasks. The store systems are prehistoric and takes forever to use.

Advice to Senior ManagementEnough with all of the tasks! Create some sort of exit strategy for old signage and paperwork. Stop being fear mongers about the competition.

    Seasonal Coordinator

    Seasonal Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Memphis, TN

ProsGreat pay, good people, good attendance policy

ConsLong hours, poor organization, poor training, poor standards

Advice to Senior ManagementEstablish a company culture to ensure that it doesn't feel like we are starting from the beginning each peak season.

The glory days of Howard Lester are gone.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsGreat brands and products.

ConsNot open to new ideas. Very conservative management team and they are very insecure about opinions different than Laura Alber's (CEO).

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Started out loving the company...but my opinion changed after 9 years.

    General Manager (Former Employee)

ProsIt is a very enjoyable job when given the opportunity to help the customer. Loved my store employees and the customers. A very fun atmosphere at the store. Great salary and benefits.

ConsExpectations of the the staff are way to high for the hours provided. It was impossible to get everything done that needed to be done on the hours allocated. Constantly cutting hours at the stores, forcing exempt managers to put in lots of extra hours and coming in on days off. They say they are focused on customer service, but the amount of tasking they assign, doesn't allow for employees to spend the kind of time they need with the customer. They expect huge visual displays and turns to take place that should take about 50 hours to get done, then they tell you to cut all your hours, but still get the visual changes done, so then you're working on displays during open hours when you should be helping your customer. Ever since Howard Lester passed, the company has gone down hill. Corporate is greedy and only focusing on global expansion and losing sight of the heart of the company...Howard would be very disappointed in how NOT People First the company is.

Advice to Senior ManagementA store can't run on 200 hours and accomplish all the tasks that are assigned. Constantly cutting hours and keeping the same task expectations is unrealistic and demotivating. Also need new registers that aren't literally from 1985! Get into the 20th century.

Nice place, nice people, nice discount...not-so-nice hourly pay

    Casual Part-time Associate (Current Employee)
    Leesburg, VA

ProsNice working environment, great co-workers, and generally nice customers, not to mention a generous 40% discount, keep many an associate complacent.

ConsA low hourly wage, practically invisible annual raises, and fewer scheduled hours than most would like, makes this a job only for those who don't really need to earn a living.
