    I worked at Williams-Sonoma as a contractor

    Pros

Beautiful stores, nice and interesting high-end products, and employees get a 40% discount on non-electronics. Good place for people who enjoy cooking and baking. Always finding neat products and learning good culinary tips.

    Cons

Cutthroat retail, in that each employee must meet a monthly quota of sales, but cannot enjoy the benefit of a commission. This results in every man for himself. Colleagues steal sales from each other regularly. If you're asked to work in the back storeroom, then you miss any sales for the day. If you don't make x-amount of dollars in sales per month, you get a "letter." After enough letters, you're out. It is a no-win, demoralizing environment. Also, products are way overpriced.

    Advice to Management

There's got to be a better way to motivate sales without creating such a stressful environment.

    Pros

Great exposure to upper level management even at a lower level. Very close knit company.

    Cons

Retail level pay at corporate and slow to move up even when with the company for a long period of time.

    Advice to Management

Reward those who work hard and they'll be more willing to stay longer!

    Pros

Friendly staff that is always positive and happy to work with, Great products, merchandise and customer service policies. Company has other brands under its umbrella.

    Cons

Pay is low for the amount of work that is put in some days, especially the holidays. Customers can be demanding over things that don't really matter at the end of the day.

    Advice to Management

Daily planning could be tighter, more organized and communicated plans for daily tasks and floor sets. When one person isn't there, it doesn't mean the process should stop, there should be proactive plans at hand the day before so everyone can be on the same page and make the most of everyones efforts.

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits just an expensive place to be

    Cons

too many people in charge and wanting to think they are in charge.

    Advice to Management

Be more thoughtful in your approach to the business overall and eliminate the clans that rule. there are good people there but they aren't given the chance to help.

    Pros

Love the product and the discount, fun employee contests/incentives, great customer relations(long lasting)

    Cons

No room for internal promotions/ they consistently hire from outside the company even after you have completed all/any training courses, no payroll( cut hours constantly) then you are micro managed on why you didn't do the sales, then meanwhile given outrageous visual expectations(drilling, painting, move fixtures back to the same direction has previous direction) to get done in between customers. The customers continually are allowed to recycle their worn merchandise that they have used that's 2-3 yrs old and if we say no, they complain and we get in trouble, even if you are sticking to the return policy. Low pay rate compared to other high end retailers.

    Advice to Management

More recognition and less calling out what we need to improve on, poor upper (GM, DM) management, a lot of inner politics and favoritism.

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma

    Pros

A highly inspired position. I was surrounded by other creatives like myself with sales backgrounds as well as creative eyes. Had the opportunity to work and meet with a wide range of personalities.

    Cons

Hours are inconsistent. One week you have 35 the next you have 4, and the pay is less than desirable. Because of this fact, employee turnover is like nothing I have ever experienced.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the valuable employees you do have, give them the priority and a bit of incentive to stay put, i.e. consistent hours and better pay.
