    Enjoyable team, culture shift

    Pros

Great people. Hiring the right team is usually a priority for most store managers. Can't say I've worked with better people since shifting into the corporate world from retail.

    Cons

Holiday hours were beastly for the management team, with unreasonable expectations made on staff -- changing the ENTIRE store plan on Christmas Eve until 9 or 10PM at night? Stuff like that. The culture of offering employee incentives for sales used to be fantastic -- then it became insulting.

    Cons

Total lack of interest and effort on behalf of store manager to give advance notice of schedule and enable flexibility for working moms

    Advice to Management

Add oversight of store managers scheduling procedures

    Pros

-Lots of learning opportunities -Mobility within departments -Some departments have fantastic leaders/directors

    Cons

-Sorority girl mentality -Difficult to implement change

    Advice to Management

Promotions just because of the time spent at the company isn't always the best way to go. It should really be on skill and talent.

    Pros

Great products, great customers, buyers and merchandisers were great.

    Cons

Technology is way behind. Ordering systems and return processes for catalog purchases are archaic. Hard to get the customer service one expects and should get from an upscale retailer with the lack of updated technology.

    Pros

Employees have great growth potential if they are willing to grow up through the traditional store-management path, or if they live in San Francisco and want to work for the corporate offices. Most people are very excited to work there and are usually pretty knowledgable about kitchen things. The discount is great and fortunately applies to every one of WSI's brands, so you can pretty much outfit an entire home through the company if you wanted to.

    Cons

The pay is retail pay, and often lower than that of competitors. There is no field infrastructure, and associates are expected to perform all tasks all the time, so if you want to move into, say, a field visual position, it's virtually impossible. Moreover, managers are biased––great thing if they like you, not so great if they don't, regardless of the quality of your work. The lack of field management infrastructure often leaves stores unsupported by corporate, so the consistency of the brand varies tremendously from store to store, which doesn't look so great for the brand as a whole and often undermines the quality of the product.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff! Reward them adequately for their work! Create real opportunities and paths for growth, so that the sales associate positions aren't such dead-end jobs. A lot of young people who come to the company are hoping to move up, and they don't necessarily want to move to San Francisco to do that.

    Pros

They often have a tremendous amount of positions available for seasonal workers when the holiday season rolls around. The employee discount isn't bad either

    Cons

It is unfortunately very rare that they hold onto any of their seasonal employees. They have to get approval from corporate.

    Advice to Management

I honestly have no complaints. Both managers I have worked for were very personable and professional.
