game plan is very flawed

Network Engineer III (Current Employee)
Noperdo (Burkina Faso)

I have been working at Windstream full-time for more than 10 years

Prosgood pay while it lasts

Consbenefits are middling to poor

basic strategy

1. replace employees with contractors who on paper are cheaper but in reality
are very expensive for crappy work.
2. remaining employees are forced to do 10 different jobs none of which they
qualified to do, end result is a mess.
3. never upgrade/replace anything even if the vendor no longer supports it.
end result is unqualified employee has no vendor support to turn to. once
   it's down that it.
4. have customers who call in for support, jump from department to department with no
one having a clue on how to resolve there issue.

these games will raise revenue in the short term, but destroy the company longterm

basically run by a bunch of accountants that know how to doctor quarterly statements
in the short term, but have not a clue how to run a CLEC

toxic

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Windstream full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI made some life long friends while working at Windstream and there are a lot of extremely intelligent honest people that work there.

ConsThe culture at the Little Rock headquarters is very negative and moral is always low. Everyone is in fear of their job and the pay is not good for the amount of hours a salaried employee ends up working. Most of the managers and directors there are great but I do not believe it can change until some upper level and C-level employees are just let go and bring in some fresh positive people to change the toxic environment upper level management has created. Employees are just widgets there. You probably lose a year off your life for every 2 years you work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive Jeff Gardner and Tony Thomas their golden parachutes and bring in new outside talent with forward thinking ideas to fix the negative/toxic culture Jeff and Tony created.

Retail Sales Consultant - Honest Review

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Windstream full-time for more than 3 years

ProsExcellent benefits and a decent paycheck with what we have to work with. I must say that in my particular area that the manager is fair, willing to do anything to help you out and my co-workers are amazing people.

ConsThree rounds of layoffs and a surprising store closing that came out of left field for everyone. Selling products to customers and new customers when we do not have the sufficient technology to back-up our claim. Our call-center people re-route us fifty million times as well as the customers! Small incentives to keep us happy with the everchanging quotas, less payout on services and being pushed to do more than just your 100%, because we cannot meet goal somewhere else in the state. I do not feel like I am an important part of Windstream and I would not recommend this place to a friend. I am currently seeking other employment to get out of this as I do not see this changing. Windstream will never have the technology to keep up with its competitors.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees and help change the fact that there is a disconnect in each area of this company. You put money into the equipment, but it is to provide better service to business, but do not forget about your residential customers. You HAVE to upgrade the technology as this is an everchanging business and I feel as though I LIE to customers for sales. (ie; Yeah, up to 12mb even though I know I get a consistent 15 for half the price from a competitor) Our speeds are slow, our technology is ancient and we are not winning any points from the community at all.

Employees have upstream battle to get work completed

Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Windstream full-time for more than 5 years

Prospay is good, benefits ok

ConsManagement is the biggest negative, so distracted with kingdom building and related politics and chaos attitude, that almost no one is focused on managing/helping employees to complete important tasks/projects for the parent company other then constant nagging which is basically ineffectual.

Company knows there's a problem, Hiring army of project managers who along with multiple bosses is constantly hounding you about is this project done? how about the 20 other projects I've given you? PM's like to have constant meeting as a harassment technique to force you to put there project at the top of the list.

And by the way don't forget to take care of the huge stack of operation issues that keep you from working on the projects anyways. If you try to work on anything that takes any real concentration or time forget it! You'll be interrupted every 10 seconds by IM, phone, email, boss yelling orders out his office etc. etc, concentration and focus is not needed here!

Infrastructure is bad, very old pc's with no software other then bare minimum, no training or involvement in products until the day it's dumped in your lap. Manager volunteers your for projects/work without even talking to employee to make sure he has time, knowledge to complete task, not even sure they care about such pesky details.

Suggestion to upper management is to terminate almost all baseline employees and replace with contracts since terrible management more or less makes it impossible for employees to function anyhow, hope management will not sabotage contractors efforts. Also suggest company stop buying high end software that they refuse to train people on or provide proper admin resources for, therefore making it useless. Like throwing money in the toilet.

If you went a paycheck/benefits it's ok, if you went a job where you given time/resources to get meaningful work done forget about it.

Advice to Senior Managementmake management accountable for task completion. don't let them promise you the moon and deliver nothing. If they where accountable for getting the job done they would have to care about there employees since that's who get's it done!!! They don't care since feeding misinformation to superiors then making excuses for why it was not done is a way of life for management

Horrible place to work due to bad mgt in dying industry

Training Group (Former Employee)

I worked at Windstream full-time for more than a year

ProsThere are some very talented people there

ConsSalaried workers are expected to work as many as 100 hrs per week, as long as it takes to get the job done. My managers did not provide detail regarding what my deliverable was and did not provide feedback when requested, but blamed me and my team for a failed product. Other teams experienced the same treatment. In addition, highest mgt set a sales goal, which if reached, would give each employee a $1000 bonus. Goal was exceeded, but mgt would not pay the bonus - gave a stupid excuse.

Advice to Senior ManagementI am not going to waste my time. They do not care about their workers.

Slightly above a dictatorship

Inside Sales Representative (Current Employee)

I have been working at Windstream full-time for more than a year

ProsMy direct supervisor is the only reason I've stayed.

ConsThey will threaten your job every chance they get, instead of finding ways to motivate their employees. The quotas are completely unattainable, there were 12 out of 87 people who last month were able to get any kind of commission check. They are not flexible with time off/family emergencies/being sick/etc. No where to move up unless you are friends with upper management, hard work does not pay off.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe fair. Listen to your employees and find incentives or other positive ways to motivate them, not threaten.

My time at Windstream has been more of a sentence than a career

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Windstream

ProsThey offer a great benefits package, reasonable work schedule, and some good locations. There are lots of opportunities for hourly employees.

ConsNo minimum requirements to be in management, they hire some real inexperienced, incompetent individuals for management positions. They only promote their closest friends.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be easily impressed by people who use corporate buzzwords and talk circles. Pay attention to what goes on at some of the first line management positions.

One of the worst places to work for

Tech Support Level I (Current Employee)

I have been working at Windstream

Prosworking from home and having a decent time schedule

ConsThey don't care for their employees since they are not the ones paying for, the federal goverment pay them to hire people like me in disability, when asked for a rise was told they could give me more hours if I wanted to as in kind of sick joke

Advice to Senior Managementfight for your employees, don't see them as a meal ticket
