    Current Employee - Engineering Intern
    Current Employee - Engineering Intern

I have been working at Xcel Energy as an intern

    Pros

Good people and reasonable stress. The company provides an important public service and there are opportunities to work on significant projects. Strong safety culture and flexible hours.

    Cons

The silo effect is huge here. Very bureaucratic culture/process. IT and HR programs are excessive. Rate cases drive financial performance and determine management philosophy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much corporate doublespeak. Honesty and candor are appreciated by employees. Consider greater regional autonomy instead of one-size-fits-all Xcel-wide policies.

Current Employee - Design Engineer - Nuclear in Welch, MN

I have been working at Xcel Energy full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Pay is excellent
    Benefits are good
    High safety culture
    Good, hard working employees
Good company overall, with a diverse energy portfolio

    Cons

    Low quality of life
Long work hours during refueling outages
    Unstable management (but improving)
    Micromanagement from upper management
A lot of "desk time" and paperwork/red tape

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't block engineers from moving to new positions because you are afraid to lose them, let them grow and be a better asset to your company. Provide promotions to engineers based on performance and expected job duties, not just on years of service.

I have been working at Xcel Energy as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good pay, good training, and great learning opportunity of how a big organization such as this is run and operated. Very strict safety standards which reassures me of the reliability of this plant.

    Cons

Slow background check process, didn't really feel challenged mentally during my two months here. Mainly busy work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start the background screening process much sooner. Place interns in positions where they can apply knowledge of what they have learned in school.

    Pros

Freedom in work schedule and assignments. Creating my own results and helping my coworkers.

    Cons

Communicating to Management. They are non technical and do not understand the engineering issues we are facing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to empower Employees. You have smart and motivated people working here, but management has become top heavy and it is hard to enact real change.

I have been working at Xcel Energy full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good benefits, time off and flexibiltiy are the best assets of this company. Pay is above average for position type in Amarillo.

    Cons

Can be difficult to progress as some departments tend to form groups and don't look as potential. Instead they look at is this person a friend and are they part of us...Should be based on qualifications only.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull off the rose colored glasses.
