Good Opportunity

Intern (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at Xcel Energy as an intern for less than a year

ProsSmart people, good pay/benefits, interesting work, and a stable work environment. I would definitely recommend working here

ConsNot too many negatives. Somewhat resistant and slow to change. Already an industry leader but could be better. Hiring process needs to be faster.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue on the path of progressive safety methods, modernizing the culture, and focus on renewables. I am really happy with the direction of the company.

Cleanest power plants in the country

Engineering Intern (Former Employee)
Hobbs, NM

I worked at Xcel Energy as an intern for less than a year

ProsSafe company with great benefits. With all the new EPA regulations there is opportunity for new technology experience. There are not many engineers so there are opportunities for great advancement and pay!

ConsAs an engineer in a union business, you are not allowed to touch any tools. If you are somebody that doesn't like to get messy then this is a perfect job for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are management if you are an engineer. So if you have a problem with it then fix yourself.

Good

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Xcel Energy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay & benefits, opportunity to move in to other positions & cross train. Fantastic people to work with who are very committed to what they do, but still know how to enjoy life.

ConsSeverely lagging in technology. Computer software is upwards of 10 years old and changes are slow to come. Clear division in the bargaining and non-bargaining employees, with occasional resentment between the groups.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs Xcel's workforce becomes younger, it's imperative that the company commits to becoming more technologically advanced for all employees, not just executives. Additionally, just because someone does amazingly in their role does not mean that they will be an equally amazing manager. Too many poor managers exist and the company is reluctant to do anything about it because we don't want to lose their expertise in other aspects of the business. Find them different roles.

So far so good

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Eau Claire, WI

I have been working at Xcel Energy full-time for less than a year

Prosvery good place for advancement, really make you feel involved and important

Conscall center has varying shifts, which sucks and makes planning vacations difficult. and they wont work around other work schedules at all, or any other schedules besides school.

Advice to Senior Managementcould really use more steady hours. would be nice to have a set schedule.

The best company I ever worked for.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Amarillo, TX

I have been working at Xcel Energy

ProsCulturally diverse, decent pay, great work environment, " work family", flexible work schedules, flexible PTO, good raises, opportunities for advancement both personally and professionally.

ConsNot enough "full" time positions, dealing with Minnesota and Colorado people at times, benefits for contractors are non-existing, contractors don't have access to everything full- timers do.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo make more full time positions for contractors who have paid their dues, to offer benefits to contractors, even if it is not through Xcel Energy.

This has been a wonderful environment and great knowledge base for me

Contracted Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at Xcel Energy

ProsXcel offers alot of different benefits but one of the best benefits would be the way they make sure you have all the learning tools you require.

ConsI think they contract out to much. There are alot of us that are on pins and needles waiting for our jobs to open to be permanent.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not make contractors wait so long to become permanent. If they enjoy their job and the supervisor is happy with them they should be given the first shot at the position instead of being made to fight for it with the rest of the company and those outside.
