    BEWARE!!

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsIf you are a "male" and a "schmoozer" you will do well.

Cons"Boys Club"; Untrained managers; 50+ Get fired; Resistant to new technologies.

Advice to Senior Management1. Take formal classes on how to manage engineering professionals.
    2. Try to learn technical aspects of area you are managing.
    3. Leave emotional baggage at home.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    The Good, Bad, and Ugly

    Sales Operations Support (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsThe good are my co-workers. Location is good being in west SJ. Cafeteria is decent.

ConsThe bad is upper management - they just don't have people management skills. A continuous string of "restructurings" and outsourcing of jobs to Singapore. Upper management is rewarded for cost reductions at all costs, unfortunately they have cut too deep and too much experience has been lost. Not a recoverable situation.

Also, the company bet the farm on dominating the 28nm node - well that didn't quite happen. Not good if you are planning on a lasting career here. Lot's of pressure to keep treading water.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe ugly - upper management needs to be replaced. The board needs to seriously think about replacing the current CEO. The problem is they won't attract top flight talent, so bring Wim back!!!

Cold and depressing - It's a very unfriendly place to work

    Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

    Prosa. Location: In the valley
    b. Legacy mainstream products work well in the field
    c. Customers are buffered from the effects of the mismanagement of the last few years
    d. Cafeteria

Consa. "Mean"agement will grin and stab you - (if you are thinking of a marketing job, look elsewhere)
    b. There is no work-life balance since Moshe and his SVPs took control - (bring Wim out of retirement please!)
    c. Poor job security - if you're not one of the favored employees
    d. Marketing is clueless about what customers want and management will force their will on the customer
    e. Performance management culture came with lousy HR VP from cadence and managers abuse it now.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeave or ask the board to sell Xilinx to a stronger company. It is not sufficient to keep increasing the cash dividend to shareholders. Xilinx has stalled compared to Altera, to which we have lost market share since 2010. Altera also has the lead in 40nm which is going to lead to market loss in the coming years as well.

Formerly the best place to work; now, it’s the worst place to work.

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

    Pros- dedicated and caring employees
    - extremely hard working employee who try to care about the company
    - great if you're in the inner circle

    Cons- insane long hours
    - no advancement possible
    - questionable management decisions
    - unrealistic expectations set by mangement
    - staff work in fear of losing their jobs
    - expect a summer and winter shutdown

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to care more about the employee.

Went from great place to work to a chore

Senior Staff Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsGood benefits, nice coworkers, good working conditions, ok working hours
All that remains from previous management: but for how long

ConsInept management, just follows whoever sounds the most convincing (and most of the time that's not the most competent).
Only looking at saving money. Replacing the experienced people leaving with kids fresh of Indian universities.
As a consequence no more innovation: our main competitor who was way behind us has now taken the lead technologically and the gap is increasing.
More good people are leaving as it is obvious that the management is only counting dollars but has no idea where to go.
To be promoted you need to be friends with the right people now, does not matter what you do, just be convincing.
It's sad to see such a good company with good people, great technology, loosing all that and become a place you go just to get your paycheck while the incompetents good talkers get huge bonuses in reward to be yes men to management.

Advice to Senior ManagementJudge on the facts, not on the talks.
Or listen to the real workers, not the managers/VP that say everything is all right while it is obvious that something is broken.
We are way behind our competitor now. You're nor hiring competent people now, only the cheapest engineers that you can find in India & US.
Maybe the margins are getting better on the short term, but we're loosing big market shares
I guess you are just interested in your big bonuses now..

It was a dream job in the beginning.

Senior Field Applications Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsWhen Xilinx gets a better senior management team, maybe they will climb out of the hole that they are in today.

ConsThe current senior management is terrible. Where is Wim and Bernie when you need them? 2009, 2010 was like a huge experiment to Moshe and his cronies. We were kicking Altera's tail until they current management took over.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to accept the fact that Altera now has surpassed Xilinx. The customers that Xilinx lost will likely very difficult to win back. From this point forward, if Moshe and company don't start listening to suggestions, the board will eventually ask them to start packing.

    Gone down the drain.

    Staff Design Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsLatest technology. Highly profitable company and comparativley stable employment.
Colleagues are usually nice to work with.

ConsBad employment review process, become worse with new managment. Mismanaged the last few product cycles of past 4-5years and losing market share.
Limited opportunity for career growth unless you can talk BS with mid- and upper-level managemtn.
Too many senior people not doing anything and executives lack of communication and outsourcoing all new jobs to India and Singapore.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo evaluation of how the rank employees feel and try to do a better job of determining deadlines and project goals.

Not what it used to be

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Longmont, CO

    ProsInteresting, stimulating work, great peers.

ConsWhen the new CEO took over, he destroyed the culture, instituted annual (for the two years he's been there) layoffs, generated mistrust and loathing among the staff, and developed a reputation for not listening to those in the trenches who have done the work before. Xilinx used to be a wonderful place to work; now it's a place people want to leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your staff - and trust them.

Is it possible that the "The Cadence Mafia" at Xilinx may work for Altera ? or Xilinx - WTF happened?

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

    Prosgreat technology
    interesting work
    smart technology people

ConsRank and rating system has destroyed most of what Xilinx was before "The Cadence Mafia" took over. This system will be the turning point of this company and will reduce it to a commodity developer with Altera taking more market share. Progress and innovation is NOT changing a brand with a new logo colour or a notional pyramid - are you trying to sell tennis shoes or deodorant? Users of these special parts don't care about a colour or a pyramid - they want great silicon and tools based on the legacy of 25 years of innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementCutting some of the science projects was a good idea. However, you are taking this too far into a commodity scenario.
Drop the new rank and rating system - unless the goal is to further purge the US work force.
Realize that "offshoring" your workers is more costly than what dollars alone can measure. Man up to the reality that the strategy seems to layoff as much of the US side of Xilinx and "hire" the whole of India. There is a collective vote of "no confidence" with the present leadership from the perspective of employees NOT in the LSI - Cadence crew.

Board of Directors are the Architects of this Disaster

    Staff Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Jose, CA

ProsThe company has a good history of being a leader in the FPGA space. People for the most part are wonderful to work with on a daily basis.

ConsThe board of directors brought in new management, and they have completely gutted the place. New management just doesn't understand FPGAs. Core engineering main function is to train their overseas replacements.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to the board is define a set of failure thresholds that when crossed result in replacement of the current e-staff. Promote from within instead of making the assumption that outsiders 'know better'.
