    Pros

Employees are great to work with. Management cares for employees and empowers them to do their job. Salary meets industry standards.

    Cons

Will not consider full time employment to avoid benefits, unless in management. Lack of benefits deters potential talent from joining.

    Pros

Employment from early age possible [15+ with working papers in certain departments] Opportunities for expanded responsibility, advancement Annual performance review, often accompanied by pay increase Varied duties create varied work experience Ongoing certifications and training paid for by employer Flexible hours

    Cons

Occasional payroll department confusion [always remediated in timely manner] Highly varied hours may lead to early morning/late night shifts [always with the employee's preference considered, though] Starting at minimum wage makes annual pay increases appreciated, but often underwhelming.

    Advice to Management

Reward loyalty in long-term employees, rather than maintaining them at or near minimum wage.

    Pros

Organizing and managing programs that inspire and help kids grow and learn! Working with many different people and abilities and interests. Helping to facilitate additional programs to enrich the lives of many.

    Cons

Not enough time in the day to fit in all the activities we'd like.

    Pros

Serve your community, change lives, connect with people in a great way and plenty of learning opportunities. Benefits are wonderful.

    Cons

There is a lot going on. Long hours and long weeks are common. Always a desire to do more with the same or fewer resources. Not much opportunity for advancement unless you are willing to relocate.

    Advice to Management

Be more family oriented and flexible with professional staff. Recognize that they must fulfill their other "wheel of life" obligations to remain successful within the organization.

    Pros

Awesome way to network and build community with members. Great way to learn about the many opportunities within the YMCA. If you want to gain more YMCA network opportunities, you can do so, and the Y has specific guidelines for you to follow to reach your goals. Free membership for you with a significant membership discount for your household along with a great discounts on Y programs. Employees in salary roles are pretty committed to the cause! In terms of quality of life while working, it's extremely good. It varies per center and team, but overall, we have the best meetings and conferences when we get together as an association. 90% of the time, you'll receive a great response from another employee, at another local Ymca, if they know or find out you're an employee. It's a nice extended family feeling.

    Cons

Pay is awful if you're in Membership Services position (I can't speak for wellness positions). I understand the entry level pay, but employees with over 5 years of service at or under $8 is crazy. Pay jumps significantly when you're in director or administration roles, and there's a broad range due to center goals so don't get too excited. Most roles are $30k and up. Youth program roles pay reasonably in comparison to other youth organizations. Good luck moving up! Apply for the position you want because you may need to move out of state to move up or already be in the mind of the person hiring. Seniority is not considered. Part-time positions are revolving doors, but full-time positions are few and best obtained by word of mouth. (If you're open to jumping city to city, state to state OR even outside the country to move up, please know that the Y is great for that in all seriousness)

    Advice to Management

Most of us are committed to the mission and members but can't afford to be dedicated to the future. Please give dedicated part-time staff a raise.
