    Pros

The pros of working for a ymca are many. People that you meet and get the opportunity to help, and just get the opportunity to know them.

    Cons

The pay and the hours are probably the biggest con. Im just starting out with the company so hopefully this will improve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To pay your good employees well, so that maybe they will stay. To have to hire and train new staff all the time is hard.

I work at Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich, IL as a part-time greeter when I am not attending school full-time.

I have been working at YMCA part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The job itself is easy and the gym members are very friendly. Hours are consistent and the managers are accommodating when you need time off. As an employee benefit you're given a free adult membership which is normally $60 a month and gives you unlimited access to the entire facility.

    Cons

The work can get pretty boring during longer shifts, and management frowns upon anything not work-related. This means you can't read a book or browse the internet to keep yourself busy. Also, while most of the employees are friendly, the environment is almost too casual with a lot of gossip going on between coworkers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Confront individual employees who are not performing their jobs properly instead of punishing everyone in the department. Being reprimanded for the actions of someone else when you yourself are performing well is a serious problem for employee morale.

I have been working at YMCA full-time

    Pros

Great development opportunities, networking, training, and positive staff. Management is very compassionate and truly care about their employees and their community. The mission is represented in every role and the emotional paycheck is tremendous! Flexible family-friendly scheduling to manage work/life balance.

    Cons

Staff tend to be young and inexperienced (but enthusiastic) and turnover is high due to low pay and/or exhaustion. Pay increases are rare, despite achievement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage workloads for exempt staff and pay rates carefully to avoid burnout.

I have been working at YMCA part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Very motivated, passionate employees. Everyone here is extremely committed to the work they are doing, which is very important for a nonprofit. Management is competent, friendly, and understanding, but still is dedicated to getting the most out of their employees and the organization. Great work environment, laid-back and positive in many ways. Employees work hard and are invested in their work. Plus, we get free food all the time from leftovers from conferences held at the office, which is a nice perk.

    Cons

Sometimes smaller projects and tasks can get forgotten about or lost in the shuffle, but this does not happen too frequently. Some systems are a little outdated, which can be frustrating and counterproductive at times, but the organization is currently addressing these issues and rapidly updating many of these systems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the work environment. Try to keep up-to-date with modern business practices to empower your employees to maximize the organization's potential.

    Cons

    I worked at YMCA

    Pros

I had a ton of fun as a lifeguard at the Y. Great friends, great schedule, and an easy job with decent pay compared to what was available for high school/college kids. Working aquatics is great and you get a free membership to a nice gym.

    Cons

Other life guarding jobs paid better in the area, but I always stuck with the benefits of working at the y. Also sometimes the clients treated us terribly.
