Well Run, Good People

Lifeguard (Former Employee)
State College, PA

I worked at YMCA part-time for more than a year

ProsWorking at your neighborhood Y means you are working with members of your community, both as staff and as patrons. It is a very welcoming environment, and allows you to give a positive influence on the community.

ConsThe quality of the facilities can vary. I was fortunate to work in a Y that was very well maintained. Although, it is important to remember that the Y will never be comparable to some of the more lavish fitness centers, but it doesn't try to be.

Great stepping stone

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at YMCA full-time

ProsI loved working with the kids and my coworkers, we all worked together for about 4 years so we knew each other quite well. The kids we get in our department (sports) are always eager to learn and behave really well compared to the other groups at camp. One of our camp directors was also very helpful.

ConsUnfortunately, nonprofit politics gets in the way of some people doing their job correctly. The other camp director was totally incompetent and loved playing favorites. I've been there for 6 years and I haven't seen such incompetency in a while.

Loved the Y

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at YMCA part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe Y is Great Place to work and I loved the Free Membership. Learned many skills that helped my career, I miss working there.

ConsProfits came first. I also worked in two departments with two very different supervisors, one appreciated me and valued my opinion and ideas the other it was their way or the highway.

Abundance of Training

Assistant Business Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at YMCA full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThere are endless training opportunities to strengthen one's skill set.

ConsThe pay is mediocre at best. The job can be your life! You must create your own work/life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs a non profit one understands the budgets and restraints, however it would be beneficial if staff were paid accordingly.

Great company to work for, very rewarding

Summer Camp Counselor (Former Employee)
Tampa, FL

I worked at YMCA part-time for more than 5 years

ProsThis is a very motivating company to work for. The job is very rewarding, especially working with children. At the Y we have the ability to make differences in lives daily.

ConsThe only challenge is the pay is not great. This is something you must know coming into the job. You get paid in reward of making a difference in the lives of others and little actual pay.

I have been working at YMCA part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFlexible scheduling, wonderful co-workers, meaningful experience, opportunity for advancement, chance to make a positive impact on the lives of children

ConsCompensation not the best since it's a non-profit agency, upper-level management sometimes too lax in terms of employee discipline
