Poster child for corporate greed

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time for more than 10 years

ProsMany intellegent people that really care about doing a good job and making a great product,

ConsWhatching execs strip away all that made the company a great place to work so they can pocket millions and walk away after a few years.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf your employees are your greatist asset then treat them that way, Actions speak louder than words and if you really want to know how employees feel talk to them. Don't depend on mid level management.

Great Product, Management is Self Destructive

Assistant Manager/Interim General Manager (Former Employee)
Salt Lake City, UT

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

ProsThere are some great people in this company. A solid product, Yankee Candle is a company you can feel confident representing.

ConsMy location had 13 managers in 7 months. You read that right, 13. That kind of turnover is unacceptable, and is a reflection on district and region management. I worked as an Assistant Manager and Interim General Manager, and ran the store by myself. Store management gets burned out with the constant changes and promotions, and sales goals are frequently not met. In a struggling economy, candles are some of the first things to stop buying, especially with the Kohl's and Bed Bath and Beyond wholesale options, making your time less and less valuable to a dying company.

Advice to Senior ManagementClose some stores. You're cutting your client base into fourths when you have enough for maybe one store. Also, don't kill your employees. They're only as perform as well as they want to, and in retail sales, there's always another job around the corner. You lost the majority of your management in Utah for this reason. Treat your employees better. Cut the stores you don't need. Lastly, don't run your stores and employees into the ground. You'll close your retail stores if you don't change.

Pathetic and disgraceful

Second Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Naples, FL

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time for less than a year

Pros50 percent off all wax discount and deal with sweet customers

ConsThe manager loves to create drama and problems amongst co-workers. Shows up late all the time and brings personal life to work with her. Takes all credit for what everyone else does and tells dm's that she is perfect and everyone else does wrong. Plays favorites. Sets people up for failure by not properly training anyone and make it seem like its their fault because you don't want to kiss her butt.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want a team to work together as a team maybe just maybe listen to complaints of all employees. Just because a manager says something you believe it and you have no idea that it is the manger who is causing the problem. Send people in to check on that nobody knows because just so you know they all call eachother to let someone know if some is going to the store. or another possibility go back into the video tapes and actually see who does the work and who takes credit. It's time ya'll get on top of it otherwise the company will go downhill bigtime because of managers who act like they don't have to abide by the rules and expect everyone else to.

"Disorganized Company, Workers are nothing but employee numbers to corporate"

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time for more than a year

ProsGreat Co-Workers, Outstanding support system with associates.

ConsToo many "managers" in the mix of things micro-managing everything; Unprofessional management from upper management that filters down to the store level. Everything is negative from a management standpoint.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management be more supportive of your store managers and associates for what they do "right" instead of always of what is "wrong". There is a blatant lack of communication. Do not put so much emphasis on "numbers" and "secret shoppers". People are not numbers.

Be aware of time punches

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Janesville, WI

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time for less than a year

ProsThe products are wonderful, albeit expensive, especially for some markets. Staff is encouraged to be very friendly and attentive toward customers

ConsIf you're three minutes late according to the time clock on the computer, you're late. There is no consideration for clocks being variable. If the computer says you're late, you ARE! Be late more than three times, you're terminated. No excuses. That includes punching in for your shift or punching back in from your break. Breaks and meal-times are almost non-existent, especially when the management is trying to make payroll. Employees are often expected to work a 6-8 hour shift with no meal break, are alone in the store, so you'd better not have to go to the bathroom! Having too many managers (I was the assistant, with TWO second-assistants) and no associates (we had ONE) is also a downfall. The manager in the store I worked at didn't like to work nights and weekends, (although, according to the handbook, it's a requirement that he did), put one of the second assistants on mainly days, and stuck me with the rest, resulting in absolutely no quality of life for me. I tried talking about it with the manager, to no avail. When I tried consulting with upper management, I was soundly put in my place and told to discuss it with the manager, after I'd told them it was no use! There is a culture of tale-telling and back-stabbing there.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow employees a little leeway when it comes to time punches. Most people make the effort to be on time. If the lateness is more than 5 or 10 minutes, then maybe that warrants a write -up, but to terminate someone based on a time punch is absurd. Being able to resolve conflict after going through the chain of command would also be a plus.

Never work here

Store (Former Employee)

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

ProsBenefits package and employee discount are both pretty good

ConsI really don't understand why anyone stays working at this company. I worked there for a year and wish I would have left sooner. I left to manage a larger retail store and am so much happier. I dreaded coming to work every day for Yankee. Managers are just labor savors, you really have too small of a staff to "manage" much. The company is very mis-focused. The 2 large metrics they rate you on is ADS(average dollar per sale) and secret shops. Both show that they care very little about your actual interaction with the guests and developing a rapore with them. using these metrics they train to not care about the guest unless they spend over $30 each visit. I believe you should treat every guest the same when spending $1 or $1000. the secret shop only makes the employees live in fear each day that they will forget one of the many add-ons that don't even relate to what the customer may be purchasing. I mean really how disconnected to your customer can you be to always try to add on a wick trimmer to someone who only wants to fragrance their car?

1st Assistant Manager

First Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

ProsBest reason to work for the company is because you don`t have to stay over night to do floor moves and best part get paid every week.

ConsCompany is super fake. Don't care about their employees. Very very cheap with payroll. They want so much work done with no staff and no $$$. I would think twice about working for this company if your thinking of applying.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think the DM should work more elbow to elbow with their management staff instead of bossing around not even knowing how to run a store on their own. DM take there titles beyond their heads. M.Morris D37

Incompetent management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
South Deerfield, MA

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time for more than a year

ProsThe company is led by a capable CEO. He is backed by a sensible board of directors. The products are good

ConsMy review is for corporate. Execs are unethical. They lie to CEO and to own teams. They dump work on good workers while excusing others. This results in good workers and professionals leaving within months. Recently VP of insights, several good workers and brand director left due to excessive pressure and no support. Other good workers are biding time. Empire building is at every level. Exec team doesn't let managers connect with CEO. Execs back bite against CEO. CEO continues to rely on execs that are actively trying to sabotage him. Poor results are blamed on lack of IT systems and skilled people.

People interested in politics, avoiding work and staying in the area should join. People seeking good work and professional growth should be cautious. No good worker has ever lasted beyond 12 months. Good workers are let go of because they get blamed for poor performance. I do what is needed to stay because I want to stay in the area and keep my job in a tough economy.

Loved the product, loved the customers but management focus is very problematic.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Destin, FL

I worked at Yankee Candle

ProsGreat candles and great customers.

ConsLike an episode of Girls Behaving Badly...& I'm talking about managers. At times, shockingly rude service shown to customers by the store manager. Employees who fell from grace were shown the same lack of respect & became targets of gossip.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior managers, be mentors to store managers. Totally think that the unprofessionalism starts at the top.

Awesome in the begining but after 4 years it became very stressful

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Reno, NV

I worked at Yankee Candle

ProsThe discount was fair, the customers were the best but management needs alot of people communication skills and to stand up for their best employees

ConsLow pay and no advancement even after 4 years, unfair treatment by management and they dont stand up for their asociates. Very judgemental unfair resolutions to problem issues

Advice to Senior ManagementPlay by the rules, everyone should have to follow the same, and not managers that are always gone during business hours
