I have been working at Yankee Candle part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Store manager, Assistant manger awesome, . Great Training, helpful, great team work! and of course love Yankee candle and the discount. The Customers most of the time are recurring and are wonderful!

    Cons

The pay is not good. You do have to work weekends and Christmas is the busiest time of the year. But I know that and understand and it is retail.

Employees do deserve a higher salary, it is easy work, but in regards to physical you do it all. Cleaning, trash, setting up the tables, hanging the signs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management when the store or individual wins a contest a bag of candy is a kick in the gut!

I have been working at Yankee Candle

    Pros

    Great customers that are pleasant.
Also, the product is good but not easy to convince customers to buy unless they are brand loyal due to the price. ...considering all the other more inexpensive options that are out there.

    Cons

No payroll so manager is left to do everything and expected to stay all hours night and day to complete

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit over working managers! It is important for work life balance in return you will get them more excited about work and more out of your employees when they are on the job.

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Simple work. All processes and tasks were streamlined almost everything can be done on the sales floor. Nice balance of guidance and flexibility when it comes to merchandising and marketing opportunities.

    Cons

Managers really managed very little. Anything that required a managers discretion, HR issue, customer issues, ect., had to route through corporate or a DM. So its a good position for someone who dislikes paperwork, conference calls, and the like.

    Pros

Good for student part-time summer job.

    Cons

Lots of repetition boring factory work. Low pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They don't really see you as individuals they see you as part of the factory. Act like you care more.

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

You get 50% off all wax like candles and tarts, you get additional off if a customer returns a burned candle, they bring in a lot of cool accessories and knick knacks during the holidays, the store is very inviting.

    Cons

The secret shopper was ridiculous, they lay out a very specific way to approach and greet customers and you have to sample fragrances with all of them. Some people font even like being greeted and would rather shop on their own. You have sales goals even if you're not commissioned and in such a little store, its like the associates fight for every sale to bring up their ADS. I wish they could have more permanent positions available instead of seasonal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower the prices on your candles 30 dollars is excessive, take away all the rules for greeting people and not forcing associates to be pushy

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Product discount, internal hiring, knowledge of products/components

    Cons

bureaucracy, non-competitive pay, shifts are long and if you're a key holder you will often be by yourself, bathroom breaks are hard to come by when you're alone

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees a competitive wage.

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    The discount and the co-workers

    Cons

District management was always a challenge, they just want sales and don't care about employees, if you are a store manager you can get away with everything

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of secret shops and take better care of employees on the front lines, pay more attention to how your district managers treat store employees and especially managers, they get away with a lot of shady stuff

I worked at Yankee Candle full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Candles at a discount. The CEO is very passionate and compassionate. Communication with corporate and management is one of the best I have ever seen in the retail world. They attract great employees because of the great branding and products.

    Cons

Extremely high turn around on DM. I worked there for almost 3yrs and we had 5 DMs. You had to read daily emails to find out who your DM was that day or week. They have no official Interim Store Manager title so I was officially the Assistant Store Manager for almost 3yrs but unofficially I was the Interim Store Manager for 1.5 years with the Training Store Manager popping in once a week to check things out.
You have to be part of the "In" crowd to get anywhere. Do NOT anger your DM at all in ANY way because you will promptly find yourself without a job. On more than one occasion, I saw complete store staff fired from Store manager down because they "rubbed" the DM the wrong way so be prepared to kiss butt if you like your pay check!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think that Yankee Candle has alot of super stars working for them and they know it. There are just a few bad apples... weed them out and continue to do great things as a company!

    Cons

Too many store managers in 1 year.
Pay too low for work wanted from employees.
