I have been working at York University

    Pros

    The benefits are not bad

    Cons

Jobs are very narrow; no room for growth. If you're looking for advancement, you'll have to leave.
There are policies in place but don't expect management to actually enforce them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole university is characterized by administrative inertia. Senior administrators know the problems but unfortunately the culture there prevents anyone from doing anything. Instead they form working groups and committees to make it seem like they're addressing the problems but in reality nothing ever gets done.

Decent place. But the reputation was weak and it was good to move on from there.

I worked at York University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

York University had a good benefits program when I was there. I think it was
    defined contributions.

    Cons

It was fine, except I didn't like being in a union. Especially when the union went on strike. Salary was not super competitive, especially when considering the cost of living.

I worked at York University full-time

    Pros

The salary is good compared to other universities, and the health insurance is good, the context is slow

    Cons

My supervisor was bad (changed supervisors afterwards)
The administration is bad (dumb and slow)
Classes are badly organized (difficult to learn, bad marking, few courses to choose from)

I worked at York University as a contractor

    Pros

Close to home, and some of the employees were friendly.

    Cons

Terrible manager who could not make a decision on her own, and depended on advice from her employees who reported to her. Offered me a promotion, and after speaking to others who were jealous in the department, took back the offer. How unprofessional. Will never work here again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management need to consider the feelings of others, and think how it affects an employee's self esteem.

I have been working at York University as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The subway is coming, making the commute easier
    The pay is good

    Cons

    Fractured labour relations
Difficult order of communication between dean, department, professor, and TA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The issue of contract faculty is untenable. Retired tenured faculty members need to be replaced by tenure hires. Moreover, the glut of PhD graduates compared with the pitiful job prospects is creating a bubble of unemployed or underemployed doctoral graduates, and a seriously disaffected and indebted generation of scholars.

    I worked at York University

    Pros

The work was flexible in that I could do it when I wanted. It was intellectually stimulating and the benefits were great.

    Cons

The cons boil down to an incredibly heavy workload that is coupled with coursework and a very, very low wage.
