    Jewelry Consultant (Former Employee)

ProsThe training (3 months long) teaches you a lot about jewelry and sales strategies. The environment was laid back and the employees were helpful when I had questions or was struggling with a customer.

ConsThe commission structure sucked when you were new because if you are with a customer throughout their whole experience, but another employee helps you out a little, you have to split the sale 50/50. To me, it didn't seem completely fair, and made me hesitate to ask for help.

Advice to Senior ManagementI love the training, but not a lot of the employees follow the sales structure to a "T". Possibly keep an eye on the employees and their sales techniques.

I like working with people, team environment everybody pulling there weight It's nice to see the whole team win.

    Shipping Receiving Clerk (Former Employee)
    Irving, TX

ProsIt was like everybody was family everybody was willing to help helped me develop some new people skills. More patience with others that might not get new procedures as quick. If I had an appointment to go to that afternoon it would be easy to get some one to cover for me and I would do the same for them.

ConsI started working for ZALES as a temporary agent and going permanent the pay increase was very generous. As it came time for annual reviews some years the merit increase was good and some not so good. They would do what they could on the not so good years like cater lunch in for us reward us with movie tickets or lunch ticket for the cafeteria. It's a nice company over all it was good they would do this for us to show that board of directors and Management had the staff in mind.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think some of the same people get recognized a bit frequent, I would hate to see the look of disappointment on some of the other team members face that are really trying but just not as fast physically or quick thinkers. I understand it's a good tool t help others get their productivity up so I would propose more one on ones besides yearly employee review.

ProsFair hours, excellent on site-cafeteria with a Starbucks counter, break room on every floor, relaxed and respectful working environment, covered employee parking garage

Consvery corporate, you need to go through several nods of approval before you can get a new chair/computer/office equipment if yours happens to break, (when I was there they had paused the 401k match)

    Pros and Cons

Full Times Jewelry Consultant (Former Employee)
    Saint Peters, MO

ProsGreat pay if you have experience and great commission structure especially if your in a high volume store. Great place to learn Teamwork.

ConsA lot of upper management did not have previous jewelery experience which was frustrating and on hands training was poor for new employees. Retail hours suck and doesn't leave you much room for a structured life.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't always take sides with a manager just because you hired them doesnt mean they're always right. Try to be as fair as possible and get both sides to every story.

    Unlimited Potential

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsInspirational management, team and unlimited potential for opportunities and ability to share the love.

ConsManagement works all the time and needs to be appreciated and recognized for their tremendous contribution.
It is critical that Zales Corp. stores and online technology not only to be updated and integrated but to be innovative (Penny down and a dollar a week in 1924 to provide highest quality to everyone) which is the premise of what made Zales Corp. great.

    Mediocre

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Irving, TX

ProsPaid vacation, paid holidays, decent but not the best insurance package, onsite cafe, fitness center. Lots of overtime at the corporate building.

ConsNo room for advancement, someone has to get fired or quit for any positions to open up no matter how hard you work. I worked here 10 years and have seen three or four CEOs. Zales needs to hire an efficiency expert and evaluate the distribution center and the some other departments. Zales also, needs to get rid of the employees that are "protected" the one's that can walk around and not do anything. The ones where, when they are told or asked to do something upper management just blows you off and tells you not to mess with them anymore when the employee doesn't comply with what you asked them to do. I know for a fact there are way too many employees in the DC that have this mentality. So, basically they are getting paid to come to work and walk around.

I understand the need for "temps" but that puts the worry into the employees that do work hard and want to grow with the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementI wouldn't even know where to start.. Just look at my previous comments. When I worked for an office supply company the benefits were much better as were some of the incentives.

Speaking of incentives, those should be available to every department.
