I worked at Zales part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

We had great leadership from corporate and were always being updated on policy changes, potential dangers( when I was there the chain had a lot of robberies going on and it was kinda scary so we had to very vigilant about people coming into the store), and they kept in touch a lot with our manager. We felt very connected and supported by corporate.

    Cons

Where I worked was not ideal for a jewelry store. We had a lot of competition and desperately needed our own location. Being the most expensive jewelry store in the mall and hidden in the back did not help out with sales. The sales we got were unrealistic despite being based off of how well we did last year. We got a lot of pressure for things we couldn't control because if people don't want to buy, they aren't going to come in and no amount of signs or promotions is going to fix that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need more hours. Stronger sales people need to have evening shifts because evening guests don't buy as much and need more work. Putting weaker sales people in shifts where guests are harder to sell too is unfair.

I worked at Zales full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good employee discount, usually okay co workers. Easy work day when there are few customers. Don't have to lift heavy materials.

    Cons

Pushing credit and special events to customers when they're not really getting a good deal. Considering stones and metal are relatively worthless after purchase.

I have been working at Zales full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great home/work life balance, management team that hears its employees. Friendly atmosphere that encourages growth.

    Cons

Benefits are a bit lacking, no current 401k matching has caused a lot of people to leave. Expect that to come back after the first of the year.

I have been working at Zales full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Everyday working with the public is different. Some days are better than others. We are privileged to be a part of our guests very special, life changing moments. As a store manager it's rewarding to hire and develop new talented people.

    Cons

As a store manager there is so much to do that it is difficult to focus on our guests.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've been in a store with an office manager and I believe every store needs one. It helps the manager be able to run the sales floor and train by example. It allowed me to help everyone including myself make more money. Usually our interaction with the guest is what made us successful in the first place.

I have been working at Zales full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. You have unlimited potential . Started as sales associate, then manager, office administrator and now sales associate. zales has accommodated my needs as an individual and single mom. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    Cons

I don't see any. To those with only negative comments, you get out of it what you put into it. You have to be driven in this industry, it's not just a job but a career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those in the stores, we know what customers want . You could get some great ideas from some of us. More direct communication with upper and lower levels.

I worked at Zales full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I was able to relax while at work when no one was in the store. When someone came in, I would try my best to help the customer come to a buying decision, and to hopefully receive commission. I made $12 an hour including commission.

    Cons

The upper management wasn't that great. My manager was awesome, but above her there wasn't much support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more support to the store managers.

I have been working at Zales full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

They pay very well, its common to get raises based on performance. They are very responsive to employee feedback. Been around a long time, so they have a strong brand reputation. Guest service is truly valued in this company.

    Cons

Payroll department needs work, they rarely get it right.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promoting within is so good for moral, thank you! I would love to see more ASM positions.
The commission structure for management should include mulitple metrics and be on an accelerator / deccelerator tier, rather than all or nothing.
