    Pros

The company seems to be growing quickly and has acquired other websites recently. Writers, editors, and reviewers are all very friendly and there are no egos. (Can't speak about other departments.) PCMag Labs are committed to thoroughly testing products and reviews can be trusted.

    Cons

Marketing/sales and editorial teams share a floor--a big no-no in publishing. Benefits and incentives could be better. Despite owning a tech magazine, the company is fairly slow to pick up on cutting-edge trends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd like to see more incentive-based programs and better health perks.

    Pros

Ziff Davis has a very young and friendly work force. The average age range is from 25-35. The management is very hands off and are good people at heart. The business has been acquired twice in the past 2 years by larger companies so they must be doing something right from an outside perspective.

    Cons

There is very little carrer growth and or training/development. There are no incentives outside of you base salary to work for the company and everyone from management down to entry level employees are complacent. The product are mis represented to the clients and there is little support from management on a daily basis. I have not had a performance review in 2+b years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide you employees with more incentives (stock, bonus, profit sharing ect) Management should be more proactive with their employees in the sense of carrer growth and training/development.

    Pros

Decent Mentor, health benefits, gym reimbursement (limited),

    Cons

The whole "Perception is reality" thing, where you always had to seem busy, no one believed in efficient work, lied about a raise

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop wasting so much time trying to force everyone to pretend to be busy, focus on where we can find efficiency and give that time to the employees, they would be a lot more willing to go the extra mile

    Pros

It's a tight knit community of nerds. people are really nice but shy. this is not the kind of place where people get together outside of work. kind of place where there are not enough people to do the job so you can take on as much as you can handle which can be good or bad depending.

    Cons

NO MONEY to do ANYTHING. Salary reductions plus increase workload = not fun. sometimes i can't find printer paper. depressing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Direct answers about our salary reinstatement would be nice. be respectful enough to treat all of us like adults and tell us what is going on. There is nothing as insulting as asking a question and having that question ignored.

Current Employee - Editorial in New York, NY

    Pros

The pay is decent compared to competing companies, and day to day work life is fun. For the most part, it's a good group of people that get along and are good at what they do.

    Cons

The company is very tight with the purse strings, and good ideas can turn sour from lack of corporate support. ZD takes a hard-sell marketing approach to everything, and we tend to fail at putting products together that users will like as much as advertisors. Editorial input appears to be greatly lacking in company decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your web properties, hire some ad guys that can actually sell a print mag, and remember that your customers are your readers, not your advertisors. Advertisors are paying for access to your audience, not the other way around. If you continue to alienate your audience, eventually there won't be anything left to sell.

    Pros

Solid editorial, sales and marketing organization makes it a great place to learn the business. Many smart people work here and if you have the right manager, you can learn a lot.

    Cons

The industry is in decline and Ziff hasn't responded effectively to any of the challenges presented to the print publishing business in the past 15 years. Endlessly reorganizing and restucturing the organization seems to be the only tactic they have. Layoffs have been a constant for years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have any, they are in a tough spot and I'm not sure their problems are fixable.
