2000 CEOS, Central Mission Missing Across Teams, Brilliant and Hard Working Peope

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Zynga full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSuper brilliant and hard working people, fast advancement for those who work hard and know the politics game well, great benefits, flexible work schedule, love the mission of connecting the world through games, and long term growth potential is great.

ConsToo many cooks in the kitchen with everyone thriving on competition and politics to get ahead-at the detriment of the companies long-term mission. It was a great company 2 years back but since, a lot of turn over of veterans and new management.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on a central goal and make sure all teams stick to it. Think long term and hire people who are there for the long haul.

Once was good, but slowly declining

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Zynga as a contractor for more than a year

Pros1) Awesome perks: Free meals, coffee, beverages and snacks, and swag
2) Every day is bring your dog to work day
3) Connect and work with some amazing people
4) Create games and help them evolve

Cons1) Employee retention - losing a lot of talent due to either budget cuts/lay offs or just leaving in general due to environment.
2) Management doesn't seem to listen or care when it comes to great ideas or suggestions
3) Wasteful spending on certain things that led to office closings and layoffs including outsourcing
4) Community to player relations are at an all time low
5) Player retention is poor
6) Listening to advice/complaints is very poor

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on what the players want, that's what is driving your revenue. Take some time and listen to what community/players are saying and make sure the games run smooth. Tone down the cadence, as well as find a way to stick to a budget so you will not have to make "painful cuts"

Ownership to own a problem or domain, speed of operation

Director (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Zynga full-time for more than a year

ProsFreedom of operation, studios run as small businesses inside zynga

ConsWork life is not balanced, too many HR reviews

Advice to Senior ManagementSort out the green light process, HR should let business leads manage people

great experience that prepares you for your next position

Director (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Zynga full-time for more than 3 years

ProsMost creative people I have ever worked with
- Good Food
- Great perks
- Fun place to work

Cons- Inconsistency in level-up/promotions. I have seen people that merit their award or level up, but it is very much about who you know and a lot of brown nosing.
- The test team never gets the merit they deserve, they lost their leadership and now are lead by someone that never plays a game and doesn't listen to his team, and doesn't understand gaming
- Too many producers that think they rule the world
- They keep making the same game over and over and launch with the same issues
- Great food...expect to gain weight when you work there
- HR - no consistency in hiring, salaries, promos and every raise or hire has to be approved at least 5 times. Lose good candidates because the approval is sitting on the HR heads desk
- No 401K match
- Too many execs or upper management that don't understand what is happening in the trenches

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your eyes and look at your workforce, and give merit where merit is due.

Fast

Artist (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Zynga full-time for more than 3 years

ProsZynga moves quick and treats its employees well (despite what news reports may say). The benefits and the free meals are a great perk. Working on some of the biggest name social games in the world doesn't hurt either.

ConsWe haven't shifted with the market enough yet. Getting games out on mobile is good, new games on web is great, but where are the non ville games?

Advice to Senior ManagementTake risks.

Laid back culture but needs some direction

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Zynga full-time for less than a year

ProsFree food: awesome food at the SF headquarters. Other satellite offices have food too but not even close to the HQ. They try to keep fresh fruit and juices everywhere.

flexibility (depending on the team): if you are in a team like I am in (infrastructure) and the manager is cool about it, you will have the flexibility to work out of where you want. It really helps

good benefits: Blue-cross-PPO or Kaiser, dental offered free for employees. free GYM at the SF HQ, frequent events with food&booze.

good bonuses every quarter... particularly if you are in the game studios and you game does well.

ConsLacks direction. redundant work done a lot of times in the team. Upper management lets that happen. and some teams are working on things with no strong leads who can make strong decisions. Can't say is this is a common trend, since i have been here for less than a year. But i heard that there is a lot of shuffling of resources between teams going on all the time.

No 401K matching.

6 weeks maternity leave, which is the shortest i have seen in companies.

Chaos

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Zynga full-time for less than a year

Pros-Work at a company and on titles with strong name recognition
-Future employers may think you know what you are talking about when it comes to "social" or "data-driven" game design
-Free dinner

Cons-Work mostly with idiots
-Work unreasonable hours

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to reward and value smart work, not just hard work.
