I learned more than I've ever learned anywhere else.

Software Engineer (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsWork with highly intelligent people on interesting mobile development problems. Also, they have free food and gym membership!

ConsThe reputation of their games is pretty bad, so everyone made fun of me for working there. They made fun of me even more for enjoying it. Also, because of this reputation (and the poor market value of the company) moral was super low.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake some games that aren't just money hungry. Make some games that the employees can be proud of. Don't just fast follow, make real new and innovative games.

    Hard working, hungry, ambitious company

General Manager (Current Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat, high quality, highly motivated and straight-shooting folks
The Zynga spirit drives the company to be successful and pushes through challenging times
The constant quest on how to be more successful, make better games, increase value for our players
    Yes, the food is amazing

ConsThe outside reputation and perception of Zynga are at least one year behind the reality of the current culture, which I have found very positive.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep building up a more game development centric culture
Push to hire the best talents

    Favorite Job

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) New York, NY

Pros- great compensation and perks (free lunch/dinner, bonuses, gym, etc.)
    - work has effect on the culture at large given huge audience; feel like you have a voice
    - though it can vary by team, people are friendly and smart
    - making games is more enjoyable than most other types of software development
    - lots of exposure to new technologies / learn a lot

Cons- can be long hours and weekends, esp. around game launches
    - can involve travel at times
    - stock is struggling, and aforementioned perks+compensation a bit dialed back as a result
    - job security can be an issue if a game is not successful (though that is less the case for engineers)

Advice to Senior ManagementFind better ways to support innovation. Where's Zynga's Angry Birds / Bejeweled / Mario Bros. / etc. i.e. brilliant, original classic game?

    Zynga staffing and recruiting

Technical Recruiter (Current Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat place to try new methods of recruiting. Stress but good kind of stress. Stress to achieve not micromanagement version of stress. Great people to work with. Everyone out to help one another. Don't need to watch your back. It's easy to recruit for a company doing super well. This company has its challenges and therefore makes you a better recruiter. Managers and engineers are very talented. They keep the bar high even during tough times which is good. New engineers are guaranteed a challenging work environment with lots to learn even if you're a senior recruiter or engineer.

ConsContractors not treated like equal. Not a big deal but sometimes inhibits your ability to do a good job on behalf of the client. Company only hires recruiters as contract-to-hire which limits their ability to hire top recruiters.

A fantastic life-changing experience that I wouldn't trade for anything!

Art Intern (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsThe environment is stellar and the people are absolutely amazing! You will make tons of friends, learning and teaching others all the while. If you're not having the time of your life, you're doing it wrong.

ConsIt's such an awesome place to work, you could end up living there if you aren't careful. Between the convenience and amenities, it can be difficult to keep track of how much time you're actually spending at work.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing things great, just try not to forget the little guys.

    Principal Software Engineer

Principal Software Engineer (Current Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsVery smart people, and seriously, nothing beats Game development in terms of engineering challenges.

ConsBad press and negative outside perceptions due to some unfitted employees (possibly from too many bad acquisitions and recruitments).

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on hiring the right people with the right mindset.

    Amazing internship

Intern (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsEvery amenity you would want in the headquarters, fully stocked kitchens and great meals. Managers are constantly looking out to help you in your career development. Fast iteration gave tons of room for improvement.

ConsSome late nights trying to make deadlines, but most of the time this wasn't the case because of excellent Producers.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on looking out for younger worker's career development. It's a huge motivator
