I have been working at athenahealth as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The environment is everything you'd want out of a tech company -- fun, casual, cool perks like a beer fridge. Working from home is common and encouraged. The management teams are proactive about giving feedback and encouraging growth.

    Cons

There are many meetings and sometimes bureaucracy impedes productivity. People are extremely passionate about their work but sometimes to a fault, because it can be hard to take time away in such a fast moving environment.

I have been working at athenahealth

    Pros

It is a very fun and casual place with great work-life balance and a good culture. The work is also fun, but the benefits are the best.

    Cons

Sometimes it feels like there can be too many meetings for a tech job. Also the Perl language is annoying and outdated

    Pros

Athena has a startup mentality when it comes to the culture: it's innovative, mission-oriented, fast growing, and full of smart and motivated people who care about what we're doing. The benefits are great, compensation is in line with or above other similar technology companies in Boston. The CEO is amazing and makes you want to do better at your job. Extremely transparent: At company meetings, our CEO stands up and reads and answers (off the cuff) all of the questions asked by the employees, no matter what they are.

    Cons

The parking starting to become an issue due to how quickly we're growing. The lines in the cafeteria are also becoming an issue, though we're in the process of building a larger cafeteria (and the food is awesome). I think the fast growth could eventually impact the culture, but leadership seems hyper-aware of this and is putting teams and processes in place to make sure we keep our culture and the things which have made us such a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.

    Pros

The management team really do care about their employees. A work day is a work day still, but it is nice to have a team that is working hard to make sure you have the right tools to do your job well and are supported.

    Cons

This will sounds strange, but I think the biggest con about athenahealth is the push of their culture. Things are very positive and upbeat, don't get me wrong, but if you are a black and white thinker it can be difficult to understand. Sometimes there has to be tough news, and it doesn't always seem like it is brought to the team well.

    Pros

The potential of the Company is limitless. Support from senior management to enable change is here. Industry is in need of automation. athena is positioned to deliver that automation at reasonable prices to the healthcare providors in a cloud environment. Everyone is effected by healthcare and the industry is here to stay. Feel to be a real part of a team making a difference in the healthcare experience.

    Cons

Fast paced environment in not for everyone. athena is constantly changing. Must be ready to accept change and all that it brings (stress, confusion, challenges). The environment of a growing company may be viewed as a negative by some people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep supporting the vision and the team.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The opportunities for professional growth are fantastic.
The products and services are the best in KLAS (ranked by users)
The leadership team is passionate, innovative, forward thinking and inspiring.
The culture is the best I have ever worked in. We enjoy and on site organic cafe, discounted membership to an on site health club, we can bring our dogs to work, and we have a casual dress code.
We are addressing the REAL problem of a very broken healthcare system. What we do matters!

    Cons

We work hard- but we also play hard
FREE parking is limited for the growing number of employees- but we are working on solutions

    Keep up the great work!

    Pros

athenahealth has an amazing culture that is supported by tons of great people who really believe in the work that we do. We play hard but we also work VERY hard. I am proud to be a member of this community.
They realize our value and give us great benefits, PTO, and the ability to grow with the company if you make yourself stand out.

    Cons

The work we do is important and we are very committed to it.... that isn't a con but as a result we often work long days. Which isn't unique to athena but very common in sales.
While growing quickly is amazing, it can often mean growing pains. There is a constant flow of new people to on board and new policies to maintain. I often spend 2 hours a day teaching other people how to do things. I don't mind, but at the end of the day it makes my days longer

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep it up.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility, Plenty of growth, in some areas it still has a startup feel but without the drawbacks of a startup. Ability to go anywhere, HIT is a booming industry.

    Cons

Not all departments are equal - some are definitely better to work for than others. Some departments are under recognized for the hard work they do.
