I worked at eBay Inc. full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very cushy environment. Basically unlimited vacation time with the way "working from home" is treated. No real pressure to deliver anything.

    Cons

There is no concept of failure. No ability to take risks. Ancient tech stack and lack of talent drives any high talent new hires to leave within 1 year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire 1/3 of the company and start anew. Far to much deadwood. Also, be less concerned with managing legacy customers as you are about capturing new customers and markets.

I worked at eBay Inc. full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very smart people. Still love the site and what it is about. Competitive salaries.

    Cons

Very short term focused. Not very collaborative. Deep rooted silos and political environment make it hard to get anything done. While there are a lot of numbers / analyses that get passed around, but the reality is that decisions (which take way too long to make) are highly subjective. One of their core tenants is be open, honest, and direct. Not sure that they really live up to that ideal. Matrixed org creates many people involved in simple decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the long view. Too much managerial overhead. Empower your people more at all levels.

    Call center positions beyond stressful

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at eBay Inc.

    Pros

    Benefits kicked butt
Bagel day (before I quit carbs) and free snacks/drinks
    My team lead was great
    HR department is amazing
    Pay is top notch
    Training was extensive
Emails to notify of changes and job openings (unfortunately none that call center employees could apply for)
Teammates/team leads from other teams were always nice and helpful
    Nice location
    Free gym membership and swag

    Cons

Cafeteria quite a ways away, 30 minute lunch---you do the math
Coach scored calls like (s)he was a Harvard professor, I guess they never finished college for being a teacher and fell on this job
To get a bonus you have to meet crazy metrics! You feel rushed to get off the phone, don't dare get an escalation, but don't make the member feel rushed. Say what???
Feels like they're trying to cut numbers, hired a bunch of people, and like 1/4 have quit/been fired since the site opened.
Icy days? Don't call in or you'll get docked. Kids sick? No sitter? Death in the family? If you don't get PTO approved in advance (darn you grandpa for not giving me a two weeks notice of your death) you get docked.

No room for growth! Employees were told that there would be when we first got hired. But there wasn't. A new site opening up in Chicago though.

I was very happy at first to work here then quickly and shortly that feeling dissolved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the team leads need more appreciation for their hard work. There needs to be more flexibility with employees and real life situations. The coaching of calls needs to be toned down and more realistic. In order to be a top place for employees to want to work at, changes needed to be made.

More room for growth for employees. Pretty much what you see is what you'll get.

I have been working at eBay Inc. full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The job was an interesting place to work, there were some caring people at eBay, that relocated from Utah.

    Cons

The time-off policies were jacked up and eBay is not a family oriented place to work. Their attendance policy sucks, even if you have a sick kid. They don't care!! Some of the team leaders and coaches were not experience. They didn't know how to talk or treat the employees. I also feel there was no room for advancement. No African American's were in any positions other than taking phone calls.

I worked at eBay Inc. full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Ebay as a company is awesome, benefits from the first day.

    Cons

They really did not inform us of how awful of a job it would be. Customers yell and scream all day. Insults, threats by customers, extremely long calls of people whining and complaining about Ebay's inefficiency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your "policies" straight. Set a specific time to where a call can be disconnected if a customer is rambling non sense.

I worked at eBay Inc. full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are fair

    Cons

    Very poor work-life balance
Sr. Management doesn't practice what they preach
    Little transparency
Unclear goals and poor prioritization across the board

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much management, too much talk and not enough action. Need to regain your employee's trust with more transparency and find a way to motivate and inspire your talented employees so they can once again develop great products.
