Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. part-time for less than a year
Pros – Get to help people. Easy enough to find movies/Cds (usually). Employee Discount. Sometimes there's a little time to talk with Co-Workers.
Cons – Numbers. Selling the drivers can be a bit stressful. Yes, it's part of the job, but the company/management tends to forget all the good you do if your numbers slip even a little. People can be rude, and it's often awkward trying to push a product you know is going to charge people. Lying is the key to selling, because honestly, very few people want to sign up for something they know will charge them if they forget to cancel.
Advice to Senior Management – Get a free discount card. It'll encourage people to shop there more often. Even a rewards program would be better. Of course it wouldn't be a 10% every time deal, but maybe like an every 5 visits you get 10%, now that would be a real LOYALTY program.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. part-time for more than a year
Pros – Great regular customers. If you can sell the drivers and can manage tasks/projects you can get promoted in a short time span as I did from an associate to Assistant Manager in about 4 months. Able to play your own music depending on your store manager. Really good co-workers that get you through the day. On top of latest releases.
Cons – Worked here for 11 months. Far too many cons to justify pros. As an Associate you are paid minimum wage and as an Assistant Manager I was paid $1 more an hour despite far more pressure on tasks and selling subscriptions/memberships at the register. Far below the average, even in retail. The "drivers" you MUST sell are a scam because you WILL be charged if you forget to cancel and many associates neglect to tell them that for selfish reasons. You must sell or will be left with minimal hours and possible termination no matter how effective you are at tasks or customer service. And here's the best part: You get NO commission and have NO incentive to sell these scams. The company gets a $27 check for magazines and $20 for VIPs. You can sell these and earn the company more free money in a day than your weekly paycheck. I've done it. Customers come back outraged that they are charged without knowing they would be and you lose them forever. Not enough man hours to cover the projects the company requires and upper management works 60 hours with pay for only 40. Hard to watch and you feel bad for them. Avoid this company. Huge turnover rate for a reason. Not fun to work for a dying company.
Advice to Senior Management – If you're gonna put pressure on subscriptions/memberships, pay the workers on their performance! Increase hours for a store to complete tasks.

Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. part-time for less than a year
Pros – I worked part-time while I was in school and full-time during the summer. They were very good about working with my schedule. All of the associates and leads worked together very well and were very encouraging.
Cons – From the location, we had a lot of very disrespectful and rude customers, it made it very hard to enjoy working there. The 'membership' program, although I'm sure is responsible for the company still being around, made me feel like I was tricking the customer into signing up for something that would cost them later.

Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. part-time for less than a year
Pros – It is fun and a great environment to work and has a lot of cool stuff and all of the employees are awesome.
Cons – The pressure to sell discount cards and all of the other drivers is horrible. They like you when you do good, but even if your selling the most out of everyone they get on you for one bad day. Customers blame cashiers for the discount cards, but even if we lie to customers were pressured into doing so, just to make the company happy and then have to feel horrible that we did bad or sent people home without telling them to pay for it, knowing if we tell them most people won't sign up for it.
Advice to Senior Management – Be kinder to employees, epecially if they do a great job, you can let one bad day go, hire people to ring that have former cashier and driver selling experience. Don't make people ring all the time especially if they ask not too.

Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. full-time for less than a year
Pros – Fun, fast, cool people, fun stuff to sell and a lot of laughs.
Cons – If you don't get good numbers selling cards or warranties the job becomes a nightmare, the pressure is awful and they overlook the good work you do all to often.
Advice to Senior Management – Be more aware of the skills people have, if somebody is awful at selling discount cards but is great at sales floor...don't put them in register! Utilize your human capital better.

Former Employee – worked at f.y.e. full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Working with movies and music
Cons – Having to Sell many different programs at once. Always being under the gun for numbers. The number of hours you received for payroll never really matched the size of the store you had to run. Some of the expectations were beyond rational thought.
Advice to Senior Management – Go back to your basics and focus on what made the store a great place to go to

Current Employee – been working at f.y.e. part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – I enjoy working with the product and the interactions with the customers. Helping them discover new music and/or movies that they enjoy is the highlight of my job.
Cons – There are a constant promotions and new contests for the associates running the register, and our jobs are based on our performance during these projects. There are literally 6-7 programs to offer the customer and throwing this information at them takes away from their experience.
