    Pros

Great Discounts, Benefits, PTO, Great experience for my next job

    Cons

Unrealistic tasks, little work/life balance, high turnover due to limited advancement opportunities and minimum wage pay for sales associates, extreme amount of merchandise for size of stores

    Advice to Management

A reliable staff, extreme multitasking skills, and after work margaritas are the key to surviving life at rue21! a typical day includes receving and processing 10-50 boxes of shipment while doing weekly markdowns and glorified markdowns called merchandise "pulls". During the pulls a weekly department visual is to be completed. Also expected during these weekly events are giant entire store sign changes which are expected to be completed at closing after hours on weeknights. We then tear down the entire kit 3 days later and put all of the promos back, THEN the next night change half of them back along with the other planned changes. The entire process, among most others, is unneccessary and could be simplified but it does not appear that anyone at corporate office has ever worked in one of the actual rue21 stores. Roughly 85% of the tasks expected occur during business hours due to low payroll and have to be completed while excelling at customer service and selling their homemade fragrance bottles for 9.99 apeice, to which if you do not meet the quota of bottles for the day consider yourself a failure at life. Don't worry about not making sales, just make sure you sell fragrance!

    Pros

Honestly the only reason I am still working for rue21 is because i'm making more than minimum wage and I love the people that I work with. Since starting 5 years ago my store has went through at least 4 store managers, and more assistants than I can count or even remember the names of. So I suppose a pro could be meeting new people? I do like that as an associate I get first pick of really cheap merch like $5 shirts & $1 jewelry. Also, if your store goes through management like mine did at one point then you can probably move up quick.

    Cons

    1. Store has too much merchandise
    2. Upper management has no clue what it's like to work at the store level so they have ridiculous expectations
    3. Seniority doesn't matter--you could be a sales associate for 3 years & they may promote someone who has been there 8 months to assistant manager even though you have expressed interest multiple times. (Im still kind of bitter if you cant tell)
    4. Sales Associates receive no type of holiday pay while all management gets holiday pay even if they do not work on the holiday.
    5. They are slow on giving yearly raises! Each year you are evaluated and given a percentage raise. My 5th year was up in may and still no raise in August. Store manager just continues to tell me that my evaluation is being processed.
    6. Store manager and Upper management makes a huge deal about selling fragrance and i'm not sure why it even matters. I've sold more fragrance in one day than some sales associates and managers do for the whole week yet on the next schedule those sales associates will get more hours than me
    7. There are weeks where you are lucky to even get 10 hours.

    Advice to Management

Point blank, the stores need more hours. Stores can't perform top notch if they don't have the man power to do so. Also it's very upsetting that I worked Christmas Eve, July 4th, and Easter with no addition pay yet the managers that were off and spending time with their families were paid time+4 or time+8. I think those of us who actually work on those days should be compensated as well.

    Pros

Up and coming retailer, among the fastest growing in the nation. Number one priority is the customer and policies allow the freedom to make everyone happy. 25% employee discount, and clothes are inexpensive to start.

    Cons

Company expects the world from their employees but does not provide the payroll budget to get it done while still putting customers first and making sales goals. Only the store manager is salaried and they are expected to make rue their life in order to keep payroll low. Pay is horrible, you have to love your job in order to look past it. You will work every holiday except Christmas so work significantly cuts into family time, but this happens with all retailers.

    Advice to Management

Train every associate and allow them to help you complete tasks and reach goals! It will make your life a thousand times easier!

    Pros

Great place to start, learned a lot about retail. Fun, but hardworking bunch of people.

    Cons

Leadership was poor, the manager did not give much directions. Breaks were not given as often as they should have been for minors, and work was not evenly distributed. Many employees hid during the work day, so they would not actually have to work.

    Advice to Management

    Pay attention to your employees.

    Pros

    *Cutting edge
*CEO, CFO very intelligent and move the company forward even in a tough economy.
    *Diversified sales

    Cons

*Turnover in the main office as well as the field
*Lack of concern from department supervisors for employees

    Advice to Management

Mr. Fisch needs to look at the reasons for certain department's constant turnover. It is not always necessarily fault of the employee. Perhaps look at the management of the department.

    Pros

The environment is young and fun. The music is amazing, I'm always discovering to artists. About every other month there are 50% off weekends for employees. Very understandable when it comes to requesting days off and working around your schedule. Very diverse group of coworkers.

    Cons

Little room for personal growth, if you're hired on as an associate expect it to stay that way. The company cares about the customers but cares little about the employees. Minimum wage. Often asked to do things that are not apart of your job description. The biggest con is having a fragrance goal for every shift you work, they basically push you to shove fragrances down people's throat and aren't good at understanding that all you can do is try to sale if they customer doesn't want it they just don't want it.

    Pros

opportunity to move up is always there, most of your bosses are very easy to talk to

    Cons

Black out dates for vacations are ridiculous, you can't have any back bone with your customers for fear of a dreaded negative web hit, if you like being a workaholic and having not a lot of free time this job would be perfect for you!

    Advice to Management

    it's okay to not micromanage

    Pros

It's an easy and fun job, if you enjoy shopping and people. I typically really enjoyed my job because of my coworkers.

    Cons

You will be there extremely late recovering the store during holiday times. I'm talking, 3am late.

    Advice to Management

Don't promise promotions, that are never going to be given. I saw that happen way to much to people.
